There is no reliable evidence in the official product and pricing sources reviewed here that Grok or Codex catches more bugs. OpenAI and xAI describe coding capabilities, but neither source provides a matched, independent test showing which tool finds more defects. The cost of using both also has no universal total: it depends on whether you use subscriptions or APIs, your usage, and any applicable tool charges.

What does “catching” mean for coding work?

A coding assistant can help in several distinct ways: finding defects in existing code, spotting missed requirements, challenging faulty assumptions, or locating useful information on the web. A feature list can indicate which tasks a provider intends a product to support; it cannot establish how accurately the product performs them.

OpenAI describes Codex as “an AI agent that helps you write, review, and ship code.” xAI lists coding alongside reasoning, tool calling, and live web and X search for Grok. Those are provider descriptions, not comparative results. The reviewed official materials do not report a same-task, same-repository test that establishes which tool finds more bugs. OpenAI’s Codex access documentation and xAI’s API page describe their respective products.

Grok vs. Codex for coding: what is documented?

Question Codex Grok
What the provider says it does OpenAI describes an AI agent for writing, reviewing, and shipping code. xAI lists coding, text and reasoning, tool calling, and live web and X search among its capabilities.
Ways to access it OpenAI documents desktop, CLI, IDE extension, and web access. Codex Cloud requires an eligible account and is subject to rollout and workspace settings. xAI’s API page describes API access. The consumer plans page lists Grok access and plan features; it does not make the API prices equivalent to subscription prices.
Evidence that it catches more bugs No matched independent comparison is provided in the reviewed official sources. No matched independent comparison is provided in the reviewed official sources.

For live information discovery, xAI specifically lists web and X search. That may matter when a task depends on current online material, but search access alone does not prove that an answer or a code review is correct. For repository work, compare how each tool handles your actual files, tests, and workflow rather than treating a capability list as a score.

How to compare bug-finding on your own code

If the decision depends on which assistant catches more defects in your codebase, run a small controlled comparison. Use the same issue and repository context for both, and judge the findings against the code and tests—not against confident-sounding explanations.

  1. Choose representative tasks. Include real defects or review tasks relevant to your project, along with cases where the code is correct. The latter help reveal false alarms.
  2. Match the conditions. Give each tool the same files, issue description, relevant documentation, and web access where appropriate. Record model and tool settings, including any differences you cannot match.
  3. Repeat runs. A single result can be incidental. Repeat comparable tasks and preserve each response so you can evaluate consistency.
  4. Score findings against a rubric. Count confirmed defects found, missed defects, and false positives separately. Also check whether suggested fixes preserve requirements and pass the project’s tests.
  5. Compare the workflow as well as accuracy. Note setup, repository access, review effort, turnaround, and the billing route used. A tool that finds a defect but requires substantial verification may fit differently from one that integrates better into your process.

This is a practical way to choose for a particular workload, not a universal benchmark. Results from one repository or task set should not be generalized to every language, project, or kind of bug.

What Grok and Codex cost

The billing routes are not interchangeable. Grok’s consumer subscriptions, Grok API usage, Codex usage through a ChatGPT plan, Codex API-key usage, and Enterprise token billing are different ways to pay. The prices below are those shown on the cited official pages when accessed in 2026; check the live pages and checkout for current terms and availability in your location.

Route Published price or billing basis What the figure means
Grok consumer plans Free: $0/month; SuperGrok: $30/month; SuperGrok Plus: $100/month Prices shown on xAI’s plans page. Listed features and usage levels vary by plan, and these three prices do not necessarily exhaust all available tiers.
Grok API, `grok-4.6` $2 per million text input tokens and $6 per million output tokens xAI’s listed API rates for that model, which has a listed 500,000-token context window. These are not consumer subscription prices; check separately priced tools or media use.
Codex through a ChatGPT plan Plan-based access and usage limits; limits vary by plan Codex usage and billing follow the applicable ChatGPT plan. Codex Cloud eligibility and availability depend on account, rollout, and workspace settings. OpenAI says standard cloud environments have no separate VM charge at launch, while model use counts against the applicable allowance, credits, or billing.
Codex using an API key API pricing Using an API key follows API pricing rather than the ChatGPT-plan billing route.
Codex Enterprise token billing Depends on model, token use, and applicable feature charges OpenAI’s Enterprise rate card lists model-specific input, cached-input, and output rates per million tokens for the stated token-based Enterprise arrangement. It is not a general subscription price or a substitute for another organization’s negotiated terms.

For the Grok API, estimate the text-token portion using the selected model’s input and output rates, then check whether tools or media add charges. For token-billed Codex Enterprise use, the basic calculation is:

Use the rates for the actual model and billing arrangement. The xAI API page lists Grok API capabilities and rates; OpenAI’s Enterprise rate card explains its token-based billing. Neither calculation should be applied to a consumer subscription as though that subscription were a per-token plan.

What would using both cost?

There is no single combined monthly price supported by these published figures. A reader paying for a Grok subscription and accessing Codex through a ChatGPT plan would need to add the actual applicable subscription prices and account for each plan’s allowances and limits. Someone using one or both products through APIs would instead need model-specific token volumes and any separate tool or feature charges. Enterprise arrangements can add another layer of model rates, feature charges, or negotiated terms.

Codex also has a team-pricing history that should not be mistaken for a universal current offer: OpenAI’s April 2, 2026 announcement described token-billed Codex-only seats for Business and Enterprise, then said new Business pay-as-you-go seats stopped being available starting June 24, 2026; existing seats were unaffected by that update. Check current plan terms before budgeting around a team billing option.

To estimate your own combined spend, decide first whether each product will be used through a subscription or an API. Then estimate runs and token volumes, identify the models and any search or other tools involved, and check each provider’s live terms. Without those inputs, adding a Grok plan price to a Codex rate—or treating a plan allowance as unlimited use—would produce a misleading total.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose based on workflow fit: compare repository access, clients, workspace eligibility, tools, and how much manual verification each task requires.
  • Consider Grok’s documented search features when live web or X discovery is part of the work, while independently checking sources and conclusions.
  • Test bug finding on representative tasks if defect detection is the deciding factor; the official feature and pricing pages do not identify a performance winner.
  • Price the billing route you will actually use: subscription allowance, API tokens, or Enterprise terms can lead to very different costs for the same broad task.
