Neither EQ nor crossover always has to come first. The right order depends on your processor’s routing and whether you want your EQ correction to account for crossover filters already in the signal chain. Both sequences—crossover then EQ, and EQ then crossover—are documented workflows in miniDSP’s DDRC-24 AutoEQ guidance. Treat those as options for that processor, not a universal rule.

What EQ and a crossover do

Crossover: divides and routes frequency ranges

A crossover splits audio into frequency bands and directs them to appropriate drivers. In a two-way speaker, for example, a low-pass filter can limit the woofer’s upper frequencies while a high-pass filter limits low frequencies sent to the tweeter. In a subwoofer system, high-pass filtering may be applied to the main speakers and low-pass filtering to the subwoofer. Crossover filtering can also limit low-frequency energy sent to a speaker or subwoofer to help protect it from excessive excursion. miniDSP’s crossover documentation describes these functions.

EQ: changes the level of selected frequencies

Equalization adjusts the level of selected frequencies. When EQ and crossover filters are both used, the order affects the signal that reaches the later block. miniDSP’s DDRC-24 AutoEQ guide describes setting the target to match crossover filters already active in the chain, or creating EQ against a target without those filters before enabling the crossovers. The DDRC-24 manual documents both approaches.

How the two signal-chain orders differ

Order What it means in the documented DDRC-24 workflow When it may fit
Crossover then EQ AutoEQ is configured with a target that accounts for crossover filters already in the signal chain. When you want the EQ process to account for the filters that are active.
EQ then crossover EQ is created first, typically against a flat target, before enabling the crossover filters. When crossover frequencies may change later. In the DDRC-24 workflow, changing them does not by itself require another AutoEQ run.

These are examples from a particular processor’s workflow, not a claim that every DSP routes or calculates filters the same way. Check your processor’s routing and calibration instructions before applying either sequence.

Choose the order for your setup

If crossover settings are likely to change

In the DDRC-24 workflow, applying EQ first can be more flexible because a later crossover-frequency change does not by itself require another AutoEQ run. Whether that advantage applies elsewhere depends on how the specific processor implements and measures its filters.

If EQ should account for active crossover filters

A crossover-first workflow is appropriate to consider when the correction target should reflect the filters already present. The DDRC-24 manual documents this approach by matching AutoEQ’s target settings to the active crossover filters.

If you are integrating a subwoofer

Assess the response around the crossover region, including the combined output of the main speakers and subwoofer at the listening position. Adjusting or measuring the subwoofer in isolation does not show how the full system sums where their frequency ranges meet. miniDSP’s sub-integration guide discusses subwoofer EQ around the crossover and measuring the combined response.

If the speaker has a passive crossover

A passive crossover is typically inside the loudspeaker, after the upstream signal processing, and is not necessarily accessible as a user-adjustable block. Shure’s guide to selecting and operating audio signal processors describes a passive crossover as typically the final processor before the loudspeaker. That differs from an active crossover configured in a DSP, where the user can place and adjust processing in the signal chain.

What to check before changing the chain

  • Routing: Confirm where your processor places EQ and crossover filters, especially if channels or outputs have independent processing.
  • Correction target: Decide whether the EQ target should include the response of crossover filters already active.
  • Likely revisions: Consider whether you expect to change crossover frequencies after calibration; the effect on recalibration depends on the processor.
  • Measurement: For a subwoofer system, evaluate the combined acoustic response around the crossover at the listening position.
  • System-specific settings: Frequency, slope, phase, and EQ choices depend on the speakers, subwoofer, processor, and measurements. The cited guidance does not prescribe universal settings for an unspecified system.

A configurable DSP is one way to implement active crossover filters and EQ, but it is not required for every speaker system. For example, the miniDSP Flex manual documents independent output-channel crossover controls and configurable filter types and slopes.
