Most G-SHOCK watches marked 20 bar or WR20BAR are designed for swimming and active everyday water use, including surfing and jet skiing, according to Casio. The “200 m” figure is an approximate depth equivalent for the pressure rating—not a promise that the watch can be used at 200 meters. For scuba diving, Casio distinguishes standard 200 m water resistance from FROGMAN models identified as having ISO-standard 200 m diving water resistance. Check the marking and instructions for your exact model.
What do 20 bar, WR20BAR, and 200 m mean?
Bar measures pressure. Casio says WR20BAR means water resistance to 20 bar, commonly associated with 200-meter water resistance. The depth figure is an approximate equivalent: it does not mean an ordinary 20-bar G-SHOCK is rated for use at that depth. Casio describes the capability as water resistance, not unlimited waterproofing. Casio’s water-resistance FAQ explains the distinction.
Specifications are model-specific. For example, Casio’s US product page lists 200-meter water resistance for the GA-2100SRS-7A; that specification should not be assumed for every G-SHOCK.
Can you swim with a G-SHOCK?
Casio says 20-bar G-SHOCK watches are designed for swimming and active water activities. Its examples include surfing and jet skiing, as well as showering and exposure to rain. Confirm that your particular watch carries the appropriate rating rather than relying on the G-SHOCK name alone.

Casio’s Module 5719 precautions table lists swimming as suitable for watches marked 5BAR, 10BAR, or 20BAR, but not for a watch with no BAR marking. Is a standard 200 m G-SHOCK suitable for scuba diving?
Not on the strength of the 200 m figure alone. Casio distinguishes standard G-SHOCK 200 m water resistance from a watch specifically designed and tested for diving. Casio identifies FROGMAN models as having ISO-standard 200 m diving water resistance and points people seeking diving-oriented performance toward that line. When comparing watches, consider the marked rating, the activity you plan to do, and whether the model is specifically identified as meeting a diving standard. Do not choose for scuba diving by comparing depth numbers alone.

How to check your watch before wearing it in water
- Find the exact model and marking. Check the case or watch documentation for a BAR or WR marking, then confirm the specification on the official product page.
- Match the rating to the activity. Consult the operating manual for your model or module; rating categories do not all permit the same activities.
- Use a diving-specific model for scuba. Look for a model Casio identifies as designed and tested for diving, rather than treating a standard 200 m marking as dive certification.
How should you care for a G-SHOCK after swimming?
After exposure to salt water, chlorine, dirt, or other residue, Casio recommends rinsing the watch with fresh water and drying it with a soft cloth. Follow the exact module’s operating precautions for any additional handling guidance. Do not operate buttons underwater unless the documentation for your specific model explicitly allows it.
