Full Disk Access gives a Mac app unusually broad reach into information on your Mac, potentially including files, Mail, Messages and Safari browsing history. Apple says the permission largely sidesteps ordinary privacy controls so backup apps can work. It is not proof that an app collects or uploads that information, and it does not unlock every protection: you must approve the grant, FileVault still requires valid credentials or a recovery key, and other permissions remain separate.
What can an app with Full Disk Access read?
Apple warns that an app granted Full Disk Access may be able to expose information such as files, Mail, Messages and browsing history. In its October 2, 2026 announcement, Apple described the risk as sensitive information becoming reachable without users’ full knowledge or understanding. The announcement also notes that this information can involve other people who communicate with you.
That is a description of the permission’s potential reach, not evidence that every app with access reads or sends all of those data. What is accessible can depend on the macOS version, the app, the user session and protections attached to particular data. Apple does not provide a current, exhaustive file-by-file list that applies to every Mac.
Apple’s WWDC19 explanation of macOS security describes how data such as Mail, Messages and Safari history can be protected even though their underlying storage is a file-system implementation detail. That session reflects Catalina-era behavior; its examples explain the privacy model, not a definitive inventory for current macOS versions.

Why would an app need it?
Apple identifies backup apps as a legitimate use: Full Disk Access largely sidesteps ordinary privacy controls so backup software can access the data needed to create a backup. Some disk utilities or other tools may also explain a need for broad file access, but the permission itself does not establish that a particular app’s request is necessary or trustworthy.
Before approving a request, consider whether the app’s stated job reasonably needs broad access to your Mac’s data. Apple’s warning is about the risk of exposure when access is granted without users understanding it; it is not a claim that every developer misuses the permission.

What Full Disk Access does not do
It does not grant itself
An app cannot give itself Full Disk Access by including an entitlement or writing code to request it. Apple’s developer documentation on accessing files from the macOS App Sandbox says the user must choose to grant it in system settings.
It does not bypass FileVault encryption
Full Disk Access is not a way to decrypt a Mac’s storage. Apple Platform Security says that without valid login credentials or a recovery key, a FileVault-protected volume remains encrypted and protected from unauthorized access—even if the physical storage is removed and connected to another computer. This does not describe every interaction between a logged-in session and every type of protected file, but it rules out treating Full Disk Access as a substitute for disk credentials.

It does not combine separate permissions
Full Disk Access is distinct from permissions such as Accessibility and Automation. Granting one does not automatically grant the others. Apple’s security materials also note that file data-protection classes can prevent an app from opening a file—for example, a file protected with complete protection while the device is locked.
Do not assume the permission settles every question about passwords. Apple’s cited material here does not establish a universal answer for Safari passwords or Keychain contents across macOS versions and security states.

How to review or revoke Full Disk Access
Apple’s macOS file-access security guide gives these version-specific paths:
- macOS 13 or later: Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Privacy.
- macOS 12 or earlier: Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy.
Review the listed apps and remove access for any app that no longer needs it or that you do not trust. Apple says apps requiring full-storage access must be explicitly added. Removing a grant limits that app’s access through Full Disk Access; it does not uninstall the app or undo information the app may already have accessed.

What Apple says is changing
On October 2, 2026, Apple announced plans for additional controls requiring users to take very explicit action if they choose to grant Full Disk Access. The announcement does not give a release date or specify the final design and behavior, so it should be understood as a planned change rather than a feature available on a stated schedule.
