Forest monitoring combines field measurements, LiDAR, and satellite observations to describe forest extent, composition, three-dimensional structure, and change. LiDAR is particularly useful for measuring canopy structure and terrain; satellite time series reveal broad patterns and change over time; field inventories help interpret and validate those observations. Biomass, carbon, habitat, and fuel maps are usually derived estimates—not direct readings of those quantities by a sensor.

What each forest monitoring method observes

Field inventories

Field inventories record forest-resource location, composition, and distribution using systematic observations such as plot measurements. National inventories may combine field plots with remote sensing and can also document biodiversity, soil, socioeconomic aspects of forest use, and stored carbon. Their design depends on the decisions the data must support. FAO’s National Forest Inventory guidance describes their role in forest monitoring and reporting.

LiDAR

LiDAR is an active sensing method: it emits light pulses and records their returns to form three-dimensional point clouds. Airborne LiDAR can map vegetation and terrain across stands or landscapes, while terrestrial laser scanning can resolve finer plot-scale vegetation structure. From these observations, analysts can derive tree locations, tree and canopy heights, vertical canopy profiles, and surface elevation. See the USGS explanation of LiDAR and NASA’s GEDI overview.

Optical satellite imagery and time series

Optical imagery records reflected light in different spectral bands. Repeated observations, such as Landsat time series, help characterize forest distribution, species patterns, and disturbance regimes over time. Optical observations can also extend structural measurements sampled by LiDAR when the datasets are combined to map stand structure, biomass, or canopy-height change. NASA describes this approach in its Landsat and GEDI data overview.

Radar, thermal, and other sensors

Radar, thermal, optical, and LiDAR data can be fused to improve land-cover classifications, capture land-surface dynamics, and quantify environmental variables. The sources cited here describe the value of combining these data families, but do not establish detailed measurement specifications for particular radar instruments or field-sensor models. Choose a sensor based on the variable, forest, spatial scale, and monitoring period rather than assuming that all sensors measure the same things.

What analysts can derive from forest observations

Canopy structure and terrain

LiDAR observations can support estimates of canopy-top height, relative height, canopy profiles, vertical layers, and surface topography. These measurements help describe how vegetation is arranged vertically, information that a two-dimensional land-cover label alone does not provide.

Aboveground biomass and carbon

Analysts can model aboveground biomass from LiDAR structure, field measurements, and other satellite data, then use biomass estimates to estimate carbon stocks. A satellite does not directly read carbon atoms in a forest. These are modeled products with uncertainty that depends on observations, assumptions, and validation. NASA’s 2022 GEDI article describes a biomass product processed and gridded at 1-kilometer resolution; that is the grid of that product, not the instrument’s footprint or the resolution of every GEDI product. NASA also notes that roughly half of plant biomass is carbon, a general conversion context rather than a forest-specific measured fraction.

GEDI’s coverage also needs careful interpretation. NASA reported that measurements gathered during the mission’s first three years in orbit covered latitudes from 51.6° north to 51.6° south. This describes the reported mission latitude span, not uniform wall-to-wall sampling. NASA Science’s 2024 mission overview describes GEDI data collection at a spatial resolution of 25 meters; this sampling description should not be conflated with the 1-kilometer grid of the separate biomass product. NASA’s 2022 product account and NASA Science’s 2024 overview describe these distinct contexts.

Disturbance, degradation, recovery, and growth

Time series and fused datasets can help identify stand-replacement disturbance, degradation, recovery, and growth dynamics. Optical imagery contributes repeated broad-area observations; LiDAR contributes structural information. GEDI samples are discrete, however, so local or rare disturbances can fall between sampled areas, particularly in topographically and structurally diverse regions.

Fire fuels

LiDAR-derived vegetation height, crown density, and biomass volume can inform fuel classification. In the NASA-described case, adding Landsat variables improved classification, while shrub fuels remained a source of confusion. Fuel maps are therefore useful analytical products, not error-free labels for every patch of vegetation.

How to choose data for a monitoring question

Start with the decision the monitoring must inform, then match the observation method and scale to that question.

  • For vertical structure or terrain: use LiDAR products suited to the required scale, such as airborne coverage for a landscape or terrestrial scanning for plot-scale detail.
  • For broad patterns and change through time: use optical satellite time series, with field observations or LiDAR where structural interpretation is needed.
  • For biomass or carbon reporting: use modeled products supported by field measurements and other observations, and report the estimate’s uncertainty and product resolution.
  • For disturbance monitoring: account for revisit history and sampling gaps; a discrete sample may not capture a rare or localized event.
  • For habitat or fuel assessment: treat mapped structure as an input or proxy, and consider where classification confusion or ecological validation matters.
  • For management or national reporting: align inventory design, remote-sensing coverage, forest type, time period, and required uncertainty with the decisions being made.

What forest remote sensing cannot establish by itself

A forest map is not automatically a complete account of forest condition. Sampling gaps can omit local events, and classification or modeling can introduce error. Remote sensing also does not directly provide readily available information on carbon released by a disturbed forest; the USDA Forest Service’s remote-sensing chapter excerpt emphasizes combining remote sensing with ground measurements for this kind of assessment. For any derived map, distinguish the observed signal from the modeled quantity, identify the map’s scale and coverage, and use validation appropriate to the intended decision.

Why combining methods matters

The methods answer complementary questions: inventories provide observed field characteristics, LiDAR describes three-dimensional structure, and satellite time series place patterns and change in broad-area context. Their combination can improve coverage and interpretation, but it does not erase sampling gaps or classification error. NASA’s GEDI team lead for validation and calibration, John Armston, described the value of estimates “with known uncertainty” for climate reporting and other applications in the NASA GEDI article.
