Firefox Split View displays two tabs side by side inside one browser window. Unlike opening two Firefox windows, it keeps both pages together in a single layout, with a divider you can drag to resize the panes.
What Firefox Split View does
Split View is a way to keep two open tabs visible together in one Firefox window. Use it when you need to refer to one page while working in another—for example, checking a calendar while booking, comparing options, reading while taking notes, or copying information into a form. These are use cases Mozilla describes, not results from independent usability tests.
Mozilla announced that Split View began rolling out to all Firefox users with Firefox 149 on March 24, 2026. The announcement was dated March 23; rollout timing does not mean every installation received the feature at the same moment. Read Mozilla’s announcement.
How to open tabs in Split View
Start with one tab
- Right-click the tab you want to use, or Control-click it on Mac.
- Select Add Split View.
- Choose an open tab for the other pane, or select the right pane and type a website address.
The tab you started with appears on the left.
Choose two existing tabs
- Select the two tabs in the same Firefox window.
- Right-click or Control-click either selected tab.
- Select Open in Split View.
If the tabs are far apart in the tab bar, Firefox creates the split next to the active tab.

Use the keyboard-and-click shortcut
With one tab active, hold Alt on Windows or Linux, or Option on Mac, and click another tab in the same window. Firefox opens the active and selected tabs together in Split View.
Adjust and manage the two panes
- Resize: Drag the vertical divider to change the width of each pane.
- Change sides: Use the Split View controls to reverse the tabs.
- Keep both tabs, end the layout: Choose the control to separate the tabs.
- Close the pair: Choose the control to close both tabs. Closing either tab also dissolves the split.

The choice is mainly about how you want to organize the work: use Split View when two pages belong together in one Firefox window; use separate windows when you prefer to manage them independently or need to arrange more than two pages on screen. The latter is a practical implication of Split View’s two-tab limit, rather than a Mozilla recommendation.

Limits and restoring a split
- A split holds two tabs, although Mozilla says you can create an unlimited number of separate Split Views.
- Pinned tabs cannot currently be added to Split View.
- Find in Page searches only the active pane.
- If the active tab is in a tab group, the split is created within that group. If the selected tabs are in different groups, the split is created within the active tab’s group.
Firefox restores Split Views with their window when Open previous windows and tabs is enabled. It also restores them when you reopen a recently closed window. Reopening closed tabs with Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+T on Mac, does not restore the Split View layout. See Mozilla Support’s Split View instructions and limitations.
