Why exFAT is usually the practical shared choice
Microsoft’s exFAT specification says its 64-bit file-size field enables applications that depend on very large files. Check the device that will actually read the files
A computer’s ability to mount a drive does not guarantee that a television, console, camera, or recorder can read it. Format the drive without losing files
- Back up anything you need. Formatting can erase the drive’s contents. Copy important files elsewhere before proceeding.
- Confirm compatibility. Check each computer and the destination playback or recording device. If you need Windows–Mac sharing for large recordings and the device supports it, choose exFAT.
- Open the operating system’s disk utility. Select the external drive carefully, not another disk or partition.
- Choose the filesystem and format. Select exFAT for Windows–Mac sharing, NTFS for a Windows-focused drive where its features are useful, or APFS for Mac-only use. Formatting erases existing contents.
- Test before depending on it. Copy a representative video to the drive and check that the intended computer or device can read it. The cited guidance does not establish a performance ranking or a required drive capacity.
