There is no required Open Graph filename extension. The protocol accepts an absolute og:image URL that returns an image. For the safest broad compatibility, use .jpg or .jpeg for photographs and gradients, and .png when you need transparency or perfectly crisp text. Whatever extension you choose, the bytes served and the HTTP MIME type must agree.
What the Open Graph protocol actually requires
The Open Graph specification defines og:image as an image URL representing your page or object. It does not prescribe a filename suffix such as .jpg, .png or .webp. It also defines the optional og:image:type property as the MIME type of that image.
In practice, crawlers request the URL in your HTML, inspect the response, and try to decode the returned bytes. The suffix is a useful hint for people and software, but it is not the protocol rule. A URL such as https://example.com/social/card can work if it returns a valid image with the correct headers.
Use an absolute HTTP(S) URL, not a site-relative path:

Google Search Central likewise recommends that a filename extension match the file type. Its image guidance lists JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, GIF, BMP and AVIF among supported formats for images referenced by an HTML img element, but social platforms and messaging clients do not all support the same set. That is why JPEG and PNG remain the conservative choices for a social preview.
JPG, JPEG or PNG: which should you choose?
| Format | Best fit | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg) | Photos, screenshots with photographic content, gradients and large backgrounds | Small files and broad support; lossy compression is usually acceptable for a social card | No alpha transparency; repeated recompression can soften text and edges |
| PNG (.png) | Transparent artwork, logos, flat-color illustrations and text that must stay sharp | Lossless quality and transparency | Often larger than JPEG for photographic artwork |
| WebP | Use only when every destination that will fetch the preview is known to support it | Efficient compression and modern browser support | Open Graph consumers vary; an otherwise valid WebP may produce an inconsistent preview |
| AVIF, SVG, GIF or BMP | Special cases where the receiving platforms are documented to accept that format | Can be useful for particular image pipelines | Less predictable social-preview compatibility; animated formats may be reduced to a still image |
There is no technical distinction between .jpg and .jpeg; both normally identify a JPEG file. Pick one naming convention and use it consistently. Renaming a file does not convert it: changing card.png to card.jpg while leaving PNG bytes inside creates a mismatch that can confuse clients.
Make the URL, bytes and MIME type agree
The most common extension mistake is not choosing the “wrong” suffix; it is serving the wrong content behind a plausible-looking URL. Check all three layers:
- URL: the
og:imagevalue is absolute and publicly reachable over HTTP(S). - Bytes: the response is actually a decodable image, not an HTML error page, login form or redirect loop.
- HTTP header: the server sends the matching
Content-Type, such asimage/jpegfor JPEG orimage/pngfor PNG.
If you include og:image:type, make it match the response:

<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Descriptive text for the article cover">
The 1200×630 values above are an implementation example, not an Open Graph extension requirement. Use dimensions appropriate to the social surfaces you target, avoid extreme aspect ratios, and supply a high-resolution, relevant image. Google advises against generic images such as a site logo or an image dominated by arbitrary text when a more representative cover is available.
A practical format decision
- Start with the artwork. Choose JPEG for a photo or gradient-heavy design. Choose PNG when transparency, flat colors or razor-sharp text matter more than file size.
- Check the destinations. If a particular network, chat app or CMS documents WebP, AVIF or another format, you can use it for that audience. If the audience is mixed or unknown, stay with JPEG or PNG.
- Export at useful resolution. Do not enlarge a small source image after export. Keep important text and faces away from edges that may be cropped in different previews.
- Publish a stable URL. Avoid authentication, expiring query signatures and robots rules that block the crawlers you need to reach the image. A cache-friendly, versioned filename such as
article-cover-v2.jpgmakes updates easier to diagnose. - Verify the response. Inspect headers and open the exact URL from an unauthenticated browser session before asking a social platform to recrawl the page.
How to test an Open Graph image before sharing
Inspect the HTTP response
Run a header request against the exact URL in og:image:
curl -I https://example.com/social/article-cover.jpg
Look for a successful status, an image Content-Type, and a sensible content length. If the response says text/html, returns a consent page, or requires a cookie, the crawler is not receiving your image.
Inspect the page source
Confirm that the page contains one absolute og:image value in the document head. Check for a typo in the property name, an accidentally relative URL, or markup that is only injected after JavaScript runs. Add og:image:alt for accessible fallback text, and add width and height when your publishing system knows them.

Use the destination’s current debugger
Social networks cache previews. After fixing an image, use the network’s current link-preview or sharing debugger to request a fresh scrape. The exact interface and cache duration change over time, so follow the destination’s current documentation rather than assuming that a normal browser refresh will invalidate its cache.
Capture your live page without setting up a browser
A screenshot service can confirm that the published page visually displays the intended card, although it does not replace a social network’s own metadata debugger.
Or skip the browser setup:
ScreenshotNeo can capture a clean screenshot of your deployed page with one request. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents such as Claude or Cursor call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No preview or a broken-image icon | The URL is relative, private, blocked, or returns an error | Use an absolute public URL, remove authentication requirements, and test it with curl -I from outside your network |
| Image downloads but is rejected | Extension, bytes and Content-Type disagree |
Re-export in the intended format and configure the matching MIME header; update og:image:type if present |
| A login or cookie page appears as the image | A CDN, WAF or consent layer serves HTML to crawlers | Allow the image path publicly and keep consent handling on the HTML page, not on the static asset |
| Old artwork keeps appearing | The social platform cached an earlier response | Change the asset URL or use the platform’s current debugger to request a recrawl |
| Text looks fuzzy | JPEG compression, insufficient source resolution, or an aggressive crop | Export a larger source, reduce JPEG compression, or use PNG for flat graphics and text |
| Transparent areas become black or white | The consumer does not preserve PNG alpha or converts the image | Flatten the artwork onto an intentional background color when transparency is not reliably supported |
| Preview is cropped strangely | The receiving surface uses its own aspect-ratio crop | Keep essential content in a central safe area and avoid extremely wide or tall artwork |
What matters more than the extension
Once the file is valid and widely decodable, extension choice is a secondary concern. A relevant, representative image with suitable dimensions, enough resolution and reliable delivery will outperform a perfectly named file that is generic, tiny, blocked or replaced by an HTML error page. Google specifically recommends representative imagery, avoiding extreme aspect ratios, and using high resolution where possible.
For a mixed audience, the dependable default is therefore simple: export a photographic card as JPEG, export a transparent or text-heavy card as PNG, serve it from an absolute public URL with the correct MIME type, and validate the exact response before publishing.
FAQ
Does the extension have to be visible in the URL?
No. An extensionless URL can work when it returns the correct image bytes and MIME type. A visible, matching suffix is still useful for maintainability and conservative compatibility.
Can I use a query string for cache busting?
Yes, provided the complete URL remains publicly reachable and the response is still the intended image. Some crawlers cache aggressively, so changing the URL can help them notice a replacement.

Will an animated GIF become an animated social preview?
Do not assume it. Many consumers select a still frame or convert the asset, so use a deliberate static cover when the first frame matters.
Is og:image:type mandatory?
No. It is optional metadata. Supplying it accurately can help consumers identify the format sooner; supplying a wrong value is worse than omitting it.
