DVD region codes are geographic compatibility codes used on DVD-Video discs and players. If the disc’s code and the player’s code do not match, the player may refuse playback. A matching region code is not enough by itself: the disc’s video format and the player’s supported formats also matter.

What DVD region codes are for

Sony Support explains that motion-picture studios developed DVD region codes to control the home release of movies in different countries. A code identifies the geographic playback group for which a DVD is intended; it is not a rating, language setting, or measure of video quality.

Region coding is a compatibility check between a DVD-Video disc and a player. Sony’s U.S.-market guidance says its DVD players are Region 1 devices and do not play discs with other region codes. Other players may have different specifications, so check the exact model’s manual rather than assuming all players sold in a country behave alike.

DVD region codes and their broad geographic groups

Sony’s guide lists these broad groupings. They are identifiers, not a guarantee that every title sold in a listed place uses that code; check the markings on the specific disc and player.

1 Canada, the United States, and U.S. territories
2 Japan, Europe, South Africa, the Middle East (including Egypt), and Greenland
3 Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
4 Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
5 Eastern Europe, Russia, the Indian Subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
6 China
7 Reserved for unspecified special use
8 Special international venues, such as air and oceanic travel

Sony describes discs marked Region 0 or ALL as coded to play in all regions. Those markings describe the disc; they do not guarantee that every player can read its video format, disc type, or other model-specific features.

Why a matching region code may still not work

Region code and video format are separate compatibility questions. Sony says its DVD players sold in the United States support NTSC video and cannot play PAL or SECAM discs, even apart from region-code restrictions. Therefore, a disc can have a region code that matches a player and still be incompatible because of its video standard.

How to check why a DVD will not play

  1. Read the disc marking. Look for the globe symbol and region number on the disc or its packaging. Sony says a multi-region disc may show more than one number; a disc coded for all regions may say 0 or ALL.
  2. Check the player’s region. Look in the player’s manual or on the device for its region information. A Philips manual also instructs users to match the disc and player regions and notes that playback is unavailable when they differ.
  3. Check the video standard separately. Compare the disc’s stated format with the exact player’s supported formats. For example, Sony’s U.S.-sold DVD player guidance specifies NTSC support, not PAL or SECAM.
  4. If using a Mac DVD drive, check Apple’s drive guidance. Apple says the DVD’s region must match the Mac DVD drive’s region and warns that the drive has a maximum number of region changes. This applies to the Mac DVD Player and drive context described by Apple; it should not be assumed to describe every computer drive.
