Double data rate (DDR) means memory transfers data on both the rising and falling edges of a clock signal. Using both edges allows two transfers per clock cycle. In RAM terminology, DDR describes how transfers are timed; DDR4 and DDR5 are different generations of memory.

What does double data rate mean?

A clock signal alternates between rising and falling edges. DDR memory uses both edges to transfer data, rather than transferring data on just one edge. Micron describes this as a way to increase data throughput. Micron’s DDR5 product information explains the term in this context.

DDR is a transfer-timing description, not the name of one specific memory generation. In the common terminology used for computer memory, RAM is the broad category of working memory, DRAM is dynamic RAM, and SDRAM is DRAM synchronized to a system clock. DDR5 is a generation of DDR SDRAM.

What do DDR4 and DDR5 numbers identify?

The numbers identify successive memory generations, not different meanings of “double data rate.” Both DDR4 and DDR5 use transfers on rising and falling clock edges. The generations differ in their specifications and in which systems support them.

  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds

Micron lists DDR4 data rates of 600–3200 MT/s and DDR5 data rates of 4800–8800 MT/s on its product information page. These are Micron’s stated ranges; actual module and system support depends on the specific memory and platform.

How are DDR speed labels measured?

Memory transfer rate is commonly expressed in MT/s, or megatransfers per second. Clock frequency is expressed in MHz. They are related but not interchangeable: because DDR transfers data on both clock edges, its transfer rate reflects two transfer opportunities per clock cycle.

When comparing memory, read an MT/s figure as a transfer rate and an MHz figure as a clock frequency. A larger transfer-rate label alone does not establish how much faster a particular computer or application will perform.

Can DDR4 and DDR5 be used in the same computer?

No. Micron states that DDR4 and DDR5 are physically and electrically incompatible. A DDR5 module belongs in a DDR5-compatible system; a DDR4 module belongs in a DDR4-compatible system.

Before buying RAM, check the computer or motherboard documentation for the supported DDR generation and module form factor. Also confirm the system supports the module’s capacity and other specifications; generation alone is not enough to establish compatibility.

Does DDR5 always provide more bandwidth than DDR4?

Not by a fixed amount in every workload. In a 2025 white-paper simulation, Micron reported approximately 1.36× effective bandwidth for DDR5-3200 compared with DDR4-3200, and approximately 1.87× for DDR5-4800 compared with DDR4-3200. The simulation used an x64 interface, 64-byte random accesses, 66% reads, dual-rank x4 simulation, and 16Gb. These are results under those stated conditions, not guarantees of the same gains in every system or application. Micron’s 2025 DDR5 bandwidth white paper describes the comparison.

When was DDR5 standardized?

Micron reports that JEDEC announced the DDR5 SDRAM standard in July 2020. This date is attributed to Micron’s account of the announcement.
