The R beside your Android phone’s signal bars usually means the phone is roaming: it is connected to a cellular network other than its home network. It tells you about the network connection—not whether your carrier will charge extra or whether mobile data roaming is turned on.
What the R means
Motorola describes the status-bar indicator as “Connected to different cellular/mobile network (roaming).” Android’s Open Source Project also identifies a system icon for roaming mode. Roaming can happen while traveling, but the R does not prove that you have crossed an international border. Carriers may use partner networks, and the meaning of a network label can depend on the provider. For example, SaskTel documents its own “SaskTel R” indicator for use of the Rogers network in Canada; that is specific to SaskTel, not a universal meaning of the letter R. SaskTel roaming guidance

Does the R mean you will be charged?
No—not by itself. The indicator reports roaming status; it is not a billing notice or a universal statement about fees. Whether roaming costs extra depends on your carrier’s current terms, your plan, your destination, and the service you use. Check the terms that apply to your specific plan and destination rather than assuming roaming is either free or expensive. SaskTel roaming guidance
Roaming status versus the data-roaming setting
The R icon and the mobile-data-roaming setting describe different things. The icon indicates roaming mode; Android’s data-roaming setting controls whether mobile data roaming is enabled for a subscription. You can check the SIM or mobile-network settings on your phone, but menu names and locations vary by model and software version. Android Developers: TelephonyManager

What to check if you see an R
- Inspect the status bar details. Pull down from the top of the screen and look for network or notification details if you do not recognize the icon. Motorola’s status-bar icon guide
- Check the active SIM and data-roaming setting. Open your device’s SIM or mobile-network settings and confirm which SIM is active and whether data roaming is enabled. The exact path depends on the phone and software version. Android Developers: TelephonyManager
- Verify your carrier’s terms before using data. Check the current roaming policy for your plan and destination, including any travel pass or other applicable terms. The R alone cannot establish whether a charge applies. SaskTel roaming guidance
