The M beside a track historically means Master sound quality. It comes from a legacy TIDAL-compatible device manual, so it does not confirm that every current TIDAL app still uses the badge—or that a track is streaming in MQA. TIDAL’s current quality labels are Max, High, and Low.

What the M means—and what it does not mean

A TIDAL operation section in an Alpine Electronics device manual says, “Content with MASTER sound quality is indicated with ‘M’ on the tile.” In that documented interface, M is an audio-quality designation, not a maturity or explicit-content warning.

The manual documents a legacy interface. TIDAL’s current support information describes Max, High, and Low quality levels and an in-player format indicator, but does not establish whether every app or device still displays the old M badge. If you see an M today, its meaning may depend on the specific client and version; the badge alone is not proof of the format currently playing.

Why M does not mean TIDAL is streaming MQA now

“Master” was associated with TIDAL’s older Master-quality vocabulary and MQA. However, TIDAL says MQA and 360 Reality Audio have not been accessible through its apps or integrations since July 24, 2024. For MQA tracks or albums saved in a library, TIDAL says it replaced them with the highest-quality FLAC version distributed to the service, where one was available. TIDAL’s format update describes that change.

In other words, the legacy M badge explains an older designation; it is not evidence that MQA is available in current TIDAL playback. Check the player’s format indicator for the format and quality level of the current session.

How to check the format TIDAL is playing

  1. Start the track and open the Now Playing screen.
  2. Check the format indicator: on mobile, TIDAL says it appears in a pill below the progress bar; on desktop and web, it appears to the right of the progress bar.
  3. Tap the sound-format label on mobile to view more information. TIDAL says details can include bit depth and sample rate for High.
  4. Check the quality setting for that device if the displayed format is lower than expected. The indicator depends on both the selected setting and what formats are available for the track.

Label TIDAL’s described format What to keep in mind
Max HiRes FLAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz when available If HiRes FLAC is unavailable for a track, TIDAL’s documented fallback hierarchy is FLAC, then AAC.
High FLAC at 16-bit/44.1 kHz The indicator reflects the selected quality setting and available track format.
Low Compressed AAC up to 320 kbps This is TIDAL’s compressed option.

These are TIDAL’s published descriptions, not a promise that every track is available at the highest level. Device compatibility and the separate streaming or download quality setting can also affect playback. See TIDAL’s HiRes FLAC guidance for its format and indicator details.

M and E indicate different things

The same legacy device manual maps E to explicit content, while M denotes Master sound quality. So M does not mean “mature” or “explicit” in that documented interface. TIDAL currently provides settings to allow or block explicit content; its support information cautions that filtering may not prevent every explicit item from appearing. Details are in TIDAL’s explicit-content help page.
