The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science funds fundamental research and scientific facilities across fields including advanced computing, materials and chemistry, biology and environmental science, fusion, particle and nuclear physics, and isotope research. Its latest announced annual Open Call offers up to $400 million for FY 2027 research across seven program areas, chiefly to cover topics not addressed by more specific funding notices. The Open Call is one part of a much broader portfolio.
What the FY 2027 Open Call funds
DOE’s October 1, 2026 announcement describes an annual Office of Science Open Call offering up to $400 million for research in seven program areas: Advanced Scientific Computing Research, Basic Energy Sciences, Biological and Environmental Research, Fusion Energy Sciences, High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, and Isotope R&D and Production. DOE says the call is intended for FY 2027 research areas not covered by more specific topical notices, and that it is issued annually at the beginning of each fiscal year. Read DOE’s announcement and notice details before treating the announced ceiling, eligibility or scope as applicable to a particular application.
The announcement frames the opportunity as support for foundational knowledge and future technology and innovation. Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil said, “Foundational research is where the breakthroughs that shape America’s future begin.”

Examples in DOE’s FY 2026 budget request show how broad the portfolio is: fusion energy and plasma physics; nuclear and high-energy physics; materials science and chemistry; biological systems; applied mathematics; next-generation high-performance computing and simulation; artificial intelligence and machine learning; isotope science and production; quantum information science; and basic research that advances accelerator and energy technologies. This is a portfolio snapshot in the FY 2026 request, not a guarantee that every topic appears in every funding notice. See DOE’s Office of Science budget information.

| Route | Who may apply | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) | May be open to one or more types of institutions, as specified in that notice. | Eligibility, research scope, deadline, application instructions, award terms and selection criteria. |
| DOE National Laboratory Announcement | Open only to DOE laboratories. | Its laboratory-only eligibility, scope, deadline and other notice-specific requirements. |
DOE may issue a topical announcement alone or pair it with another announcement in the same area. It does not accept unsolicited proposals for financial assistance, so applicants should identify a relevant open notice rather than send an unrequested proposal. DOE says competitively selected Office of Science awards support more than 300 colleges and universities, nonprofit and for-profit research organizations, and all 17 national laboratories. That describes the awardee base; it does not mean every institution or organization is eligible for every notice. DOE’s awards page links to state-level funding information, an interactive grants map, a public abstract search and topical award listings—useful ways to check actual recipients and projects rather than infer them from a program’s subject area.

A graduate-student research route
DOE’s Office of Science Graduate Student Research program provides a separate route for students: its February 11, 2026 announcement described supplemental awards for outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their thesis research at a DOE National Laboratory with a laboratory scientist. The solicitation deadline was May 6, 2026, so that particular opportunity has passed as of October 3, 2026. The announcement listed fields including physics, chemistry, materials science, planetary science, geosciences, non-medical biosciences, fusion science and engineering, mathematics, computing, engineering, microelectronics, quantum information science and AI. Check DOE’s Graduate Student Research program page for current solicitations. DOE said more than 1,300 graduate awardees from over 170 U.S. universities had participated since 2014.

How to find the right funding notice
- Start with the research topic. Use the relevant Office of Science program area to locate opportunities; the broad portfolio does not establish that a specific subject is included in a current notice.
- Check the current fiscal-year notice. The Open Call is intended for areas not covered by more specific topical FY 2027 notices, so look for targeted calls as well as the annual call.
- Confirm applicant eligibility and route. Read whether the notice is an FOA or a DOE National Laboratory Announcement and which institution types it permits.
- Read the complete notice before applying. Verify scope, deadline, instructions, award terms, review criteria and the role of funding availability.
- Look up prior awards when useful. DOE’s awards page provides search tools and links for checking funded projects and recipients.
