In a Google Maps driving route summary, a circled 1 marks a route that includes tolls. It is a route-planning cue, not a road sign or a location marker. Depending on the route and whether toll-price estimates are available for it, Maps either shows an estimated toll price or simply indicates that tolls apply.
Where the circled 1 appears
The icon shows up beside the time and distance for each driving route after you enter a destination and request directions. It is attached to the route, so when you compare options, each one carries its own indicator. Reporting on the feature links it to Google’s 2022 announcement of toll-price estimates in Google Maps. That announcement is the origin of the toll information you see in route summaries today, though the original Google post was not checked directly for this article.
What the marker tells you
- The route uses at least one toll road or toll facility. This is the only thing the symbol establishes.
- A price may be shown. When Maps has an estimate for that route, it displays it alongside the icon.
- A price may not be shown. Some routes carry the toll marker without an amount, which means Maps knows tolls apply but has no estimate to display.
- The numeral is not a count. The 1 does not mean one toll booth or one charge. A route can have several toll points, and the icon does not tell you how many there are.
How to compare routes with tolls
When Maps offers more than one route, check three things for each option: whether tolls apply, the estimated toll cost if one is shown, and the estimated travel time. A route with a higher toll but a much shorter drive may still be the better choice, and the reverse is also true. If a toll-free option is available, Maps may label it “No Tolls” as a separate route. Maps does not guarantee that a toll-free alternative exists for every trip, so the absence of one does not mean the app has checked and ruled it out.
Avoiding tolls
If you want Maps to steer you away from tolls, enable the avoid-tolls option in route preferences. Menu labels change between app versions, so treat these paths as a starting point:

- On the mobile app, open Settings, then look for Navigation options and the route options section, and enable the option to avoid tolls.
- On the web version, start a route, open the Options menu in the directions panel, and select the option to avoid tolls.
- Request directions again and check whether the circled 1 is gone from the routes you are shown.
Avoiding tolls is a preference, not a guarantee. If the only sensible road between two points charges a toll, Maps will still show a route that includes it.
The blue circle is a different indicator
Do not confuse the circled 1 with the blue location dot. Google’s Maps Help describes the blue dot as your current position and the surrounding light-blue circle as an accuracy indicator. The circle means Maps is not certain of your exact location, and you could be anywhere inside it. A smaller circle means greater certainty. The light-blue ring has nothing to do with tolls or routes.

How far to trust toll estimates
A displayed toll price is an estimate. The available reporting establishes that Maps can provide these estimates and that coverage is not complete. It does not establish how a specific toll authority will bill a particular vehicle, payment account, or trip, and it does not confirm that the estimate covers every charge on the route. Coverage also varies by region and vehicle type, and the sources reviewed did not allow a confident statement about how consistently estimates appear in every country. For the amount you will actually pay, check with the toll operator or the payment account you use on the road.
If you are planning a long trip, look at the route’s toll indicator before you leave, not at the moment you reach the toll point. Some tolls are collected electronically, and an estimate in the app does not replace the payment method that the toll operator requires.
