“Switch between open windows” means bringing an already-open app or window to the foreground so you can use it. It does not close the other windows. The shortcut depends on whether you want to switch between apps or choose a separate window within one app.
What switching between open windows means
When you switch, the selected window becomes the active one in front of the others. You can then view or interact with it while the other windows remain open. The phrase is often used loosely: it may mean switching between different apps, or selecting among multiple windows belonging to the same app.
Switch between open apps in Windows
Press and hold Alt, then press Tab to show the switcher. Keep holding Alt and press Tab again to cycle through the available items. Release Alt to bring the highlighted app to the foreground. Microsoft calls this a way to switch between open applications on the current desktop (Microsoft’s focus and task guidance; How to Multitask in Windows).
For a visual overview, press Windows key + Tab to open Task View, then select a window or virtual desktop. Microsoft’s shortcut reference also lists Alt+Tab as “Switch between open windows” (Keyboard shortcuts in Windows).

Switch between apps or windows on a Mac
Press Command + Tab to move between open apps on macOS. This selects an app, not necessarily a particular one of its windows. To expose the windows belonging to one app, Control-click that app’s Dock icon and choose Show All Windows. You can then select the window you want. Apple documents these as distinct actions (What’s it called on my Mac?).
Which method should you use?
- Another app: Use Alt+Tab on Windows or Command+Tab on macOS.
- A particular window inside one app: Use Task View on Windows or Show All Windows from the app’s Dock icon on macOS.
- A different Windows desktop: Open Task View with Windows key+Tab and choose the desktop.
What appears in Windows’ Alt+Tab switcher can vary with settings, including whether browser tabs are shown. The exact items available may therefore differ between setups.
