“Storage drive processing” usually means computing performed near stored data rather than sending all of it to a host processor first. The established terms for this idea are on-disk data processing (ODDP) and, more broadly, computational storage. The phrase itself is not a settled technical term, so it does not specify what a drive can do.
What does storage drive processing mean?
Storage and processing are different activities. Data at rest is data resident on a device that is not being manipulated or otherwise processed, according to a U.S. government report on the economic impacts of AES. Drive processing begins when the drive or a nearby storage component performs an operation on that data.
In their 2017 survey, Mishra and Somani define on-disk data processing as an arrangement in which secondary storage drives have data-processing capability. Their term describes computation close to the stored data, rather than a particular universal feature of every HDD or SSD. (Read the survey.)
How can a storage drive process data?
A conventional drive already uses a controller and firmware to manage its operation. That routine internal management is not the same as offering additional processing for a user’s data. In an ODDP or computational-storage design, computation happens in or near the storage device, such as in a drive, a storage processor, or an array component.

For example, a 2014 U.S. patent application assigned to Nexenta describes a key/value storage device whose controller handles a put command, stores a binary data object, and returns a digest. This illustrates a specific controller-side operation; it does not establish that consumer drives generally support the same function. (US 2014/0304513 A1.)
Why process data near storage?
The main architectural motivation is to reduce how much data must move between storage and host compute nodes. If an operation can be performed close to where the data resides, the system may transfer only the relevant results instead of moving the full dataset for processing elsewhere. Mishra and Somani describe reduced data movement as a goal, not as a guaranteed speedup, latency reduction, or energy saving for every workload.

What does computational storage include?
Computational storage is a broader label than ODDP. It can refer to a computational storage drive, a processor associated with storage, or a computational storage array. These designs are not interchangeable: computation may occur in different places, and supported operations can range from a fixed, narrow function to broader programmable processing. Embedded Computing Design has reported Samsung’s second-generation SmartSSD as an SSD with data-processing functionality, but that report alone does not establish current availability or a particular model’s present capabilities. - Which operations are supported: a fixed function or a broader, programmable workload.
- How software invokes them: the supported command or API and how it integrates with the host and storage stack.
- Whether the workload benefits: how much data can be processed near storage and what data or results must still travel to the host.
- Compatibility and status: the exact model, interface, host support, and current product availability.
Samsung SmartSSD is a reported product-family example, but the cited coverage does not establish an exact current model, price, listing, or comparative benchmark. Verify those details with current vendor documentation before treating a product as suitable for a particular system.
