“Source-code compatible” means software source can be compiled for another implementation or version that supports the same specified interface, usually after recompilation. It does not, by itself, promise that compiled binaries will work unchanged, that the program will behave identically, or that performance and build files will be preserved.
What does source-code compatible mean?
The phrase describes compatibility at the level of source code and the interface it uses. If an application follows a particular API or standard, it may be possible to compile that source for another implementation that supports the same interface. A rebuild is typically expected; the source may also need limited edits or compile-time options.
There is no single universal certification behind the phrase. Its meaning depends on the project’s own definition: the API and versions covered, supported targets and tools, and any stated exclusions.

Source compatibility concerns whether source code can be compiled for another supported target. Binary compatibility, also called ABI compatibility, concerns whether already-compiled code can link or run against another implementation without being rebuilt. The two are separate guarantees.

For example, Coin3D says its implementations are source compatible across the Open Inventor 2.1 API, but are not ABI compatible. That means compatible source may be rebuilt to select an implementation even though compiled objects cannot necessarily be reused unchanged. Coin3D’s compatibility documentation describes that distinction.
Does source compatibility mean a program will behave the same?
Not necessarily. Source compatibility alone does not establish identical observable results, performance, memory use, or behavior in every corner case. A broader backward-compatibility policy may include behavioral expectations, but those need to be stated separately.
NXP’s C-Ware API User Guide gives a particularly explicit example. It attributes to C-Port Corporation a definition in which recompiling source is necessary to run an application on a given chip with the specified tools. The guide also excludes guarantees about performance, memory consumption, microcode, Makefiles, directory structure, and bug-for-bug compatibility. This is a scoped example from that guide, not a statement of current NXP policy. NXP, C-Ware API User Guide.

What do standards and project examples tell you?
Standards define shared interfaces, not universal portability
A standard can give independent implementations a common API to target. Debian’s FAQ identifies POSIX as a major basis for source-code compatibility among Unix-like systems, while noting that broad compatibility does not establish that every application will work unchanged. The application must use interfaces and behavior covered by the standard, and target implementations must support them. Debian FAQ: compatibility.

Open MPI separates API and ABI promises
Open MPI describes source-code compatibility as API compatibility for compliant MPI applications, subject to the MPI standard version supported by the version against which the application is compiled. Its ABI promises are separate and scoped by release series; the documentation also records Fortran exceptions for the v5.0.x series. These details apply to the cited documentation, so check the policy for the exact release you use rather than extending it to newer versions. Open MPI 5.0.x version compatibility.
AUTOSAR states a level-specific requirement
The AUTOSAR Classic Platform R23-11 specification requires source-code compatibility across RTE operating modes at the software-component level when source is available. It distinguishes this from object-code components, which can have additional constraints tied to the RTE generator mode. The requirement is therefore specific to that layer and specification revision, not a blanket promise for every binary or deployment. AUTOSAR Classic Platform R23-11, RTE specification.

How to evaluate a source-compatibility claim
Read the project’s compatibility policy and check the exact boundaries before planning a port or upgrade:
Recommended Free Tools
- Interface: Which API or standard, and which version, does the claim cover?
- Source changes: Must you edit the code, define compile-time flags, or use a specific API subset?
- Rebuilding: Is recompilation required for each implementation, platform, or target?
- Environment: Which operating systems, chips, compilers, toolchains, and generator modes are supported?
- Compiled artifacts: Is ABI compatibility promised separately, or must binaries and object files be rebuilt?
- Runtime guarantees: Does the policy cover observable behavior, performance, or memory use?
- Project files: Are generated code, Makefiles, directory layouts, and other build artifacts included or excluded?
A useful summary should name the covered interface and versions, state whether source edits or recompilation are needed, and preserve the policy’s exclusions. If the claim does not address binaries, behavior, or build files, do not infer those guarantees from the words “source-code compatible.”
