Parallel means handling multiple bits of data or operations at the same time; serial means handling them one after another. In technology, the distinction can describe either how data moves between devices or how processing work is performed—two related terms with different meanings in each context.

What do parallel and serial mean in data communication?

In communication, the terms describe how bits travel between devices. Parallel transmission sends several bits at the same time over separate data lines. Serial transmission sends bits successively along a serial data path, which uses fewer data lines for the data transfer. Texas Instruments’ SPI presentation illustrates the distinction with a byte sent across eight parallel data lines at once.

That eight-line example explains the idea; it is not a universal wiring standard or a performance benchmark. Nor does “serial” mean an entire interface always consists of exactly one physical wire: an interface may use separate lines for return traffic or other purposes.

Serial is a category, not one protocol

Serial describes the successive transfer of data, not a particular interface standard. Texas Instruments discusses SPI and I2C as examples of serial communication standards. They are different implementations of the broader serial approach.

Why use serial or parallel communication?

Parallel transmission can move more bits in one transfer event in the illustrated arrangement, but it requires more data lines. Serial communication reduces the number of data lines required for the data transfer, a trade-off that helps explain its widespread use in modern devices. The line count alone does not establish which approach is faster end to end; that depends on the specific interface and its requirements.

What do parallel and serial mean in processing?

In processing, the terms describe how work is carried out rather than how bits travel. Serial processing performs operations sequentially, without overlap between successive processing times. Parallel processing works on multiple objects, operations, or subsystems at the same time or with overlapping work. Completion times for different parts of parallel work may vary. James T. Townsend’s 1990 article distinguishes these processing patterns.

For example, if a task can be split into independent pieces, multiple processors may work on those pieces in parallel. If one operation must finish before the next can begin, that portion remains serial. A program or system can contain both kinds of work.

Is parallel always faster than serial?

No. Parallel work can reduce runtime when enough of the task can be divided and resources are available, but parallel processing also brings overhead. Cornell’s Fall 2024 CS 5220 performance notes identify communication and synchronization costs, extra computation and memory use, idle time, and resource contention as factors that can limit performance. Work that cannot be parallelized also remains serial.

As a result, dividing a task across more processors does not guarantee a proportional reduction in total runtime. To assess a particular case, consider how much work can run in parallel, what coordination it requires, whether resources are available, and the total runtime—not just the number of processors or bits transferred per event.

  • D-Sub ports are used for connecting external devices to a computer. They are an older method of connection, but some Parallel LPT Card and modern computers still contain them. D-sub connectors are basic yet popular input-output connectors used in various applications in Telecommunications, Data, Consumer, Industrial, Military, Instrumentation and Medical arenas.
  • Commonly called inchDB connectorsinch or inchD-subs,inch these compact connectors take their name from their characteristic D-shaped shield, which protects both sides of the connector from mechanical and electromagnetic interference. The shield asymmetric shape also ensures that it only attaches to its corresponding connector in the correct orientation.
  • The 25 pin d-sub connector, or DB25, is most commonly known for its use in digital audio and multi-channel applications for recording devices. However, the varying use for both female and male DB25 connector products has expanded to include more rigorous applications where a secure, sometimes waterproof connection and transfer of signal is required amidst high vibration and harsh environments.

Quick comparison

Context Parallel Serial
Data communication Several bits travel at once over separate data lines. Bits travel successively along a serial data path.
Processing Multiple operations, objects, or subsystems are handled simultaneously or with overlap. Operations proceed sequentially without overlap between successive processing times.
Main consideration Communication or coordination costs and available resources can limit the benefit. Work proceeds in sequence; tasks that depend on earlier results may need this order.
