“Page on demand” has no single, universal meaning in the available technical sources. It can describe a web page created when someone requests it, or— in one secondary source—a server sending only the requested portion of a file. The surrounding product or sentence determines which meaning applies.
What does “page on demand” usually mean in web development?
In a web-development context, the phrase can mean that an application creates a page in response to a visitor’s request, rather than serving a page that was prepared in advance. One account describes early web services using Common Gateway Interface (CGI) programs to create pages from parameters supplied by visitors. The account’s example illustrates the basic idea; it is historical context, not a recommendation to use CGI in new systems.
For example, a request might provide values that an application uses to assemble and return a page. Here, “on demand” describes when the page is produced: in response to a request.
Can “page on demand” mean sending part of a file?
Sometimes. A secondary overview uses “page on demand” as an alternate name for byte serving: a server sends a requested portion of a file to a client instead of sending the whole file. That source reports this usage, but it does not establish “page on demand” as a formal or universal synonym for byte serving.

This differs from generating a web page. In the first meaning, an application creates a page; in the byte-serving usage, a server delivers part of an existing file.
Is page on demand the same as print on demand?
No. Print on demand refers to producing a physical copy after an order is received. A library-science glossary describes it as digital printing of copies after an order. It is a publishing and printing concept, not another name for generating a web page or delivering part of a file.

What does “page definition” mean in IBM OnDemand?
In IBM Content Manager OnDemand, “page definition” is specialized terminology. IBM’s guide describes a page definition as a resource that sets rules for transforming line data into composed pages and text controls. This usage belongs to that document-management context; it does not define the general phrase “page on demand.”
How can you tell which meaning is intended?
Look at what is being requested and which system is handling it:

A web page itself is a document with a unique URL and associated files, according to an industry glossary. That description identifies the object, but it does not decide which on-demand process someone means. If the phrase appears in product documentation or a technical sentence, use the surrounding product name and context to interpret it.
