Mastering a Sprite in Fortnite permanently marks it as mastered on your account, advances Sprite Mastery rewards, and lets you display it in a Sprite Pod back bling. Epic’s v42.10 notes also say a mastered Sprite costs 50% less Sprite Dust to resummon. Mastery does not preserve the Sprite’s level if you lose it: the level can reset, while its mastered status remains.
What mastery changes permanently
Mastery is lasting collection progress, not a guarantee that a Sprite stays powered up from match to match. Epic says a mastered Sprite remains mastered even if its level returns to level 1 after it is lost. A crown in the Sprite tab indicates that mastery has been recorded.
- Account status: the Sprite stays marked as mastered even if its level resets.
- Rewards: mastery advances the Sprite Mastery reward track, which Epic’s v42.10 notes say grants rewards and Gizmos.
- Display: Epic says mastered Sprites can be placed in the Sprite Pod back bling.
- Resummoning: Epic’s v42.10 notes say resummoning a mastered Sprite costs half as much Sprite Dust as before.
Epic explains the distinction between mastery and level in its support answer about a mastered Sprite returning to level 1. The later benefits are described in the v42.10 Fortnite Override update notes.
What mastery does not do
Mastery does not lock a Sprite at its current level. If you lose it, its level may reset to level 1; the crown and mastered status remain. In other words, mastery preserves collection progress, not the Sprite’s temporary match state.

How duplicate Sprites contribute to mastery
According to Epic’s v42.10 notes, extracting a Sprite that is already represented in your collection grants Sprite XP to that collection copy. Once the copy is maxed, extracting it masters the Sprite. The notes describe this duplicate-progression path; they do not establish a separate requirement or shortcut beyond it.

Open the Sprite tab and look for the crown icon beside the Sprite. Epic identifies that marker as the visual sign that mastery has been recorded. A level reset after losing the Sprite does not mean that mastery has been removed.
