JEDEC originally stood for the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council. The title phrase “Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council” differs slightly: the U.S. Federal Trade Commission filing uses “Electron,” not “Electronic,” when spelling out the acronym. Today, JEDEC develops open standards and publications for the microelectronics industry.
What is JEDEC?
JEDEC is a standards development organization for the semiconductor and microelectronics industries. Its work is to develop open standards and publications that help define technical requirements and practices; JEDEC is not a manufacturer of memory products.
JEDEC’s current site lists focus areas including main memory, flash memory, low-power memory, memory module design file registrations, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and wide-bandgap power semiconductors. That range extends beyond consumer memory products.
What does the name mean?
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission filing spells out JEDEC as “Joint Electron Device Engineering Council.” The title’s “Electronic” wording is not the expansion used in that filing, so “Electron” is the more precisely documented form.
#1 Best Overall
- A-Tech 16GB RAM Module, DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 3200MHz PC4-25600 (PC4-3200AA)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop DIMM, non DDR4 memory, or ECC memory types such as RDIMM, LRDIMM, and ECC UDIMM
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
What does JEDEC do with standards?
JEDEC develops standards and publications; a particular technical requirement is specified in the applicable document, not by the organization’s name alone. A standard’s scope and revision matter, and not every JEDEC standard applies to every component or system.
Engineers looking for a specific requirement can use JEDEC’s standards and documents search to locate relevant publications.
Rank #2
- A-Tech Memory RAM upgrade compatible for select Desktop PC/Computers
- Single 2 GB Module; DDR3 DIMM 240-Pin; Speeds up to 1600 MHz, PC3-12800/PC3-12800U
- NON-ECC Unbuffered ( UDIMM ); 1Rx8 or 1Rx16 (Single Rank); JEDEC standard DDR3 1.5V or DDR3L 1.35V
- Expands your system's available Memory RAM resource, improving performance, speed and allowing you to take on more while maintaining a smooth experience
- Quick and easy to install, no expertise required (Please refer to your system's manual for seating and channel guidelines)
How did JEDEC become a separate organization?
A U.S. Federal Trade Commission filing states that JEDEC was a division of the Electronic Industries Alliance until 2000, when it was separately incorporated as a nonprofit, non-stock corporation. This is historical context; it does not establish JEDEC’s current legal structure.
