There is no universal winner: compare a PC’s actual incremental electricity use and any added internet or hardware costs with a VPS’s monthly fee, data-transfer allowance, and overages. The right answer depends on your power tariff, the stream’s bitrate, and a VPS capable of running your ticker workload. Also count the time spent maintaining and recovering either setup.
Estimate the PC’s electricity cost
Use the PC’s measured power draw while the ticker is running, not a generic estimate of what a computer uses:
Monthly electricity cost = (measured watts ÷ 1,000) × hours online × electricity price per kWh.

For a 30-day month, continuous operation is 720 hours. As an illustration—not a typical-PC claim—an 80 W draw at $0.20/kWh works out to 0.08 kW × 720 × $0.20, or $11.52 for the month. Replace both inputs with your own measurements and tariff. For another month length, use its actual hours.

A plug-in electricity monitor can help measure draw at the wall. If the computer would be on anyway, try to isolate the ticker’s added consumption by comparing the same PC’s idle and ticker-running states. Charging the stream for the PC’s entire baseline draw can overstate its incremental cost. Add any broadband cost caused by the stream, and account separately for hardware wear or the PC being unavailable for other use where those matter to you.
Estimate the VPS transfer requirement
The encoder sends its feed to YouTube, so the VPS’s outbound transfer allowance matters. Estimate the data from the target bitrate and the hours streamed:
Approximate megabytes sent = bitrate in megabits per second ÷ 8 × seconds streamed.

At a steady 3 Mb/s for 30 days, that is about 0.375 MB/s and roughly 972 GB in decimal units, before protocol and container overhead. This is arithmetic based on the stated bitrate and 720 hours, not a measured stream. Check whether the provider counts GB or GiB, how it measures outbound transfer, and what it charges for excess use. Leave headroom rather than assuming the raw estimate will fit an allowance. This is encoder-to-YouTube traffic, not the audience’s total viewing traffic, which is delivered by YouTube.
VPS price example: DigitalOcean Droplets
DigitalOcean’s official Droplet pricing page lists Basic tiers at the following monthly prices and transfer allowances. These are provider-published figures, not a general VPS market range; pricing and terms can change. DigitalOcean states that per-second billing became effective January 1, 2026.

These prices alone do not establish that a plan can encode your stream. A VPS is a machine you manage: DigitalOcean says customers manage the operating system, applications and data. Before choosing a tier, confirm CPU and memory needs, operating-system and software compatibility, transfer treatment, overage pricing, taxes, and any optional storage or backup charges.

A low-cost VPS can compare favorably with a continuously powered desktop in a home with a high electricity tariff. But a small virtual machine may not have enough CPU or suitable graphics acceleration for real-time encoding. Validate the actual workload before paying for a higher-spec plan. DigitalOcean describes its CPU-Optimized Droplets as dedicated-CPU configurations for workloads needing consistent compute, including media streaming; that description does not prove a particular ticker needs one.

- Measure the PC’s wall draw while the ticker runs. If you want only the ticker’s incremental cost, compare idle and running states on the same PC.
- Calculate electricity using watts ÷ 1,000 × actual monthly hours × your all-in price per kWh. Add any broadband cost caused by the stream.
- Estimate encoder transfer from bitrate and uptime. Add overhead and headroom, then compare it with the VPS plan’s transfer rules and any overage price.
- Choose a VPS only after checking that its CPU, memory, storage and software compatibility suit the actual stream. Add selected backups or other services and applicable taxes.
- Compare monthly cash expenses, then separately note setup, maintenance, outage response and the value of the PC being unavailable for other work.
The calculations answer different questions: electricity estimates the PC’s direct operating cost, while the VPS estimate must include both rent and enough outbound transfer for the encoder feed. Neither bill captures the operator’s time or guarantees uninterrupted streaming.

YouTube’s encoder instructions say to configure the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. Keep the key private and configure the encoder running on the PC or VPS you selected.

YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you plan to run the ticker indefinitely and need archives, include a restart and archive strategy; the documented behavior does not establish that one multi-day broadcast will produce a complete archive.
