Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) is a set of storage-management software and drivers for supported Intel-based computers. It can manage RAID volumes and, on compatible systems, accelerate storage. It is not a drive, and installing an RST package cannot make unsupported hardware compatible.
What Intel Rapid Storage Technology does
Intel describes RST as a Windows-based application intended to improve storage performance and reliability. Its documented features include managing RAID volumes and accelerating storage with certain supported Intel SSD or Optane configurations. Which features are available depends on the computer’s platform, BIOS, storage hardware, operating system, and matching driver package. Intel’s RST user guide explains the supported management functions.
RST is the software and driver layer; an SSD or hard drive is the physical device. RAID combines multiple drives into a volume, with different RAID levels offering different trade-offs in performance, capacity, and resilience. RAID is not a substitute for a separate backup.

You generally need the RST driver when your particular computer’s storage configuration depends on it—for example, a supported RAID or Intel VMD setup, or a system configured by its manufacturer to use RST. Seeing “Rapid Storage Technology” in a BIOS, driver listing, or support page does not by itself prove that you should install or change anything.

Check the computer or motherboard maker’s support page and documentation for your exact model, then confirm the processor/platform generation, BIOS storage mode, drive configuration, and Windows version. Intel warns that manufacturers customize drivers for their system designs; if Intel’s generic guidance does not match your device, follow the system vendor’s instructions. Intel’s download center organizes packages by supported platform, but a product name alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
RST compatibility depends on the platform and driver
Intel lists separate RST packages for different processor generations and platform features. At the time checked, Intel listed driver 20.2.6.1025.3 for 12th–15th Gen Intel Core platforms. Its download page describes Windows support and RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 configuration, as well as VMD support on platforms with a VMD-capable BIOS. That package is not a universal driver for every Intel computer. The package listing provides the applicable details.

Intel also lists driver 19.5.8.1059.2 for 12th–13th Gen platforms, illustrating that packages can overlap in generation coverage without being interchangeable for every system. Check the exact package listing, its readme, and release notes. Intel notes that operating-system support can vary by driver release. Intel’s operating-system support guidance points users to the matching documentation.

Do not casually switch a working computer’s storage mode between AHCI, RAID, or Intel VMD. The installed operating system may rely on the existing controller configuration and driver. Intel warns that changing BIOS storage settings after Windows is installed can cause an “Inaccessible Boot Device” error on the configurations covered by its VMD guidance. Exact menu names and consequences vary by manufacturer. Intel’s VMD setup guidance is reference material for system vendors and expert users; consult your computer maker before making a change.

If you are troubleshooting a boot problem or planning a storage conversion, first identify the current BIOS mode and drive arrangement, back up important files, and obtain the model-specific instructions from the computer or motherboard manufacturer. Do not uninstall a storage driver or toggle a controller mode simply because the term RST appears in Windows or BIOS.
When RAID setup is appropriate
RAID setup is relevant only if the hardware and platform support the intended configuration and you have a reason to combine drives. Intel’s documented RAID levels include 0, 1, 5, and 10, but not every system supports all of them. Setup may require setting the BIOS storage-controller mode to RAID or Intel RST, then creating the volume in BIOS or supported management software. The manufacturer’s exact steps take precedence over generic instructions. Intel’s RAID setup guidance advises confirming RAID mode and checking the applicable package’s readme and release notes.

- Plan for drive failure and keep independent backups; RAID does not protect against every cause of data loss.
What about Intel Optane?
Older RST documentation describes acceleration with supported Optane configurations, but that does not mean any Optane module works with any RST version or computer. Intel’s RST 19.x announcement says Intel Optane Memory Series and M10 Series devices are not supported in the platform context described there. Other Optane configurations, including H Series devices, also require checking exact system and BIOS compatibility. Intel’s Optane compatibility change notice describes the relevant support context.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Before installing a driver or buying a drive
- Find your computer or motherboard’s exact model and check its manufacturer’s storage and driver guidance.
- Identify your processor/platform generation, Windows version, BIOS storage mode, and whether the system uses RAID or VMD.
- Match those details to the specific RST package, readme, and release notes; do not select a driver solely by the words “Intel RST.”
- If buying a storage drive, verify that its interface and configuration are supported by your system. A SATA SSD is only suitable if the computer supports that interface and the intended setup.
- Before changing storage settings or rebuilding a volume, follow manufacturer instructions and protect important data with a separate backup.
