Financial planning is a collaborative process for connecting financial advice to a person’s life goals and circumstances—not simply a written plan. Financial advice is broader: a recommendation about a financial matter may be advice without being part of a full planning process. “Fiduciary” describes a duty that applies to a person managing money or property for someone else, but the exact rules depend on the role and jurisdiction.

What does financial planning mean?

CFP Board defines financial planning as “a collaborative process that helps maximize a Client’s potential for meeting life goals through Financial Advice that integrates relevant elements of the Client’s personal and financial circumstances.” The definition comes from CFP Board’s U.S. standards and is reproduced in its financial planning FAQ.

The important idea is integration: planning considers relevant parts of a person’s situation together, rather than treating each financial decision as isolated. CFP Board describes steps that can include learning the client’s information and goals, analyzing their financial status, developing and presenting recommendations or alternatives, implementing recommendations, and monitoring them.

CFP Board states that financial planning is a “process,” not a document or product. A written plan can record recommendations, but the document alone is not the planning process.

How is financial planning different from financial advice?

Financial advice is the broader term. Under CFP Board’s U.S. standards, whether a communication counts as advice depends on its content, context, and presentation: would a reasonable person view it as a recommendation about specified financial matters? Exercising discretionary authority over a client’s financial assets also falls within CFP Board’s definition. See its FAQ on duties owed to clients.

Term What it describes Typical scope
Financial advice A recommendation about a financial matter, or the exercise of discretionary authority, as defined by CFP Board’s U.S. standards. May address a particular decision; it does not automatically amount to a full planning engagement.
Financial planning A collaborative process that uses financial advice in light of relevant personal and financial circumstances. Integrates goals, analysis, recommendations, and potentially implementation and monitoring.

CFP Board’s distinction is that planning is provided through financial advice, but not all financial advice requires financial planning. For example, a recommendation about one financial choice is not necessarily an integrated process addressing a client’s broader goals and circumstances.

What does fiduciary mean?

In its consumer guidance, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes a fiduciary as someone who manages money or property for another person. If someone accepts that role, the CFPB says they must manage it for that person’s benefit. Its explanation includes duties to act in the person’s best interest, exercise care, keep assets separate, and maintain good records. The CFPB’s page, “What is a fiduciary?”, was last reviewed August 28, 2026.

That is a consumer-facing explanation, not a universal definition of every fiduciary relationship. The duties that apply depend on the legal role, professional standards, and jurisdiction. The word alone does not establish which specific obligations govern a particular adviser or engagement.

What should you ask when someone offers financial planning?

Because these terms describe different things, clarify the scope of the service and the duties that apply before relying on it. Useful questions include:

  • Is the engagement a full planning process or advice on a specific decision?
  • Which goals and parts of my personal and financial circumstances will be considered?
  • Will the service include implementation or monitoring, or only recommendations?
  • What professional standard or legal role governs the relationship, and what duties does it create?
  • What is the written plan meant to document, and what work happens beyond producing it?

Does a financial plan guarantee results?

No. CFP Board’s phrase “helps maximize” describes an effort to improve a client’s potential to meet life goals; it does not promise that a goal will be achieved or that a particular investment performance will result. A plan can organize decisions and recommendations, but it cannot guarantee outcomes.
