In Excel, deleting a row or column removes that entire worksheet row or column, and the remaining rows move up or columns move left to fill the gap. Select the row number or column letter, then use Excel’s Delete command. The keyboard Delete key is different: it clears cell contents without removing the row or column.
What deleting a row or column means
Rows are identified by numbered headings along the side of the worksheet; columns are identified by lettered headings across the top. Deleting a row removes that row from the worksheet and shifts the rows beneath it up. Deleting a column removes that column and shifts the columns to its right left.
Excel worksheets have 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns, according to Microsoft Support.
How to select and delete a whole row or column
Use the row or column heading
- Click the numbered row heading to select the whole row, or click the lettered column heading to select the whole column.
- Right-click the selected heading and choose Delete, or use the worksheet’s Delete command.
Use the Excel ribbon
- Select a cell in the row or column you want to remove.
- Choose Home > Delete > Delete Sheet Rows or Home > Delete > Delete Sheet Columns.
Use keyboard shortcuts
In Windows Excel, Shift+Space selects the current row and Ctrl+Space selects the current column. After selecting the row or column, press Ctrl+Minus to delete it. Microsoft documents shortcuts by platform, so check its Excel keyboard shortcuts page for the version you use.

Deleting a row is different from clearing its contents
Pressing the keyboard’s Delete key clears the contents of selected cells; it does not remove the row or column. To remove worksheet structure, select the row or column and use Excel’s structural Delete command, or use Ctrl+Minus in Windows Excel.
Deleting cells versus deleting an entire row or column
Deleting selected cells can shift neighboring cells up or left, while deleting a whole row or column removes that worksheet structure. Choose the option that matches the scope you intend: a cell-level deletion affects the selected cells and their neighbors; a sheet-row or sheet-column deletion affects the entire row or column.
