Click and hold means pressing a mouse or other pointer button while it is over an interface item and keeping the button down before releasing it. Keep the pointer still for a hold; move it while the button is down to turn the action into a drag. On a touchscreen, the comparable sustained touch is usually called a long press or, in Microsoft’s touch terminology, select and hold.
How does click and hold work?
The action has two parts: press the primary pointer button over a target, then keep it depressed for a period. Releasing ends the hold. If the pointer stays in place, it is a stationary hold; if you move the pointer while continuing to press, you are dragging.
A completed click is generally associated with pressing and releasing the primary pointer button. A click-and-hold is not a separate universal timing rule: the W3C Pointer Events specification defines click activation but does not set a general duration for holding. The time required, if an interface requires one, depends on that particular operating system, application, or control.
How do I click and hold?
- Place the pointer over the item the instruction identifies.
- Press and keep holding the primary mouse button. Do not release it immediately.
- Keep the pointer still if the instruction asks for a hold. If it asks you to move the item, keep the button down as you move the pointer.
- Release the button when the instruction’s condition is met or the item is in the desired position.
For a touchscreen, use the interface’s touch action instead: touch and hold, or long press. The precise response depends on the app and platform.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Click and hold versus drag
A hold keeps the pointer engaged at one location. A drag keeps it engaged while repositioning it, then ends when the button is released. WCAG 2.2’s guidance describes dragging as establishing a start point, pressing and holding while moving the pointer, and releasing at an endpoint.
That distinction matters when an interface makes dragging the only way to complete a task. Under WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.5.7, functionality that uses dragging movements must also have an alternative pointer method. For example, a range slider can let a user click or tap elsewhere on its track to change the value, rather than requiring the thumb to be dragged.

Is click and hold the same as a long press?
They describe similar sustained actions through different input modes. Use “click and hold” or “press and hold the mouse button” for mouse instructions. For touch instructions, use “touch and hold” or “long press”; Microsoft’s terminology guidance also uses “select and hold” for pressing and holding an element in touch UI. State whether the pointer should remain still or move so the user knows whether to hold or drag.
Do not assume every sustained press has one standard duration. Unless an instruction names a particular device, application, or control, there is no general number of milliseconds that defines a click and hold.

Why the distinction matters for accessible controls
Some people may find precise pointer holding or repositioning difficult. Where a task depends on dragging, an alternative that avoids the path-based movement can make the same functionality available through another pointer method, as required where WCAG 2.2 SC 2.5.7 applies.
For custom web controls, the W3C Pointer Events specification recommends using the device-independent click event for activation rather than device-specific events such as mousedown or mouseup:

clickevent type when defining activation behavior for custom controls, rather than other pointing-device event types such asmousedownormouseup, which are more device-specific.”W3C Pointer Events specification
Click and hold or long press should not be confused with a multipoint or path-based gesture. NYU Digital Accessibility lists click-and-hold and long press as examples of single-point activation under its discussion of WCAG 2.1 SC 2.5.1; WCAG 2.2 SC 2.5.7 addresses dragging movements and alternatives.
