/clear is not verified here as a Playwright MCP command—or as a command that clears an AI chat while preserving the same conversation. Playwright MCP’s documented browser-testing and storage tools are separate from chat-context controls, so the command’s effect depends on the specific interface where you enter it.

What does /clear clear?

The available documentation does not identify the product or interface meant by /clear, or establish what that command does. It could refer to a command in an agent interface, a terminal action, or another product-specific workflow. Those possibilities are not interchangeable: clearing terminal output, resetting an application conversation, and changing browser storage are different operations.

Do not assume that entering /clear deletes or resets a chat, browser profile, cookies, or worktree. Confirm the exact product and version, then check that product’s current documentation for the command before relying on it.

What Playwright MCP does—and what it does not establish

Playwright MCP’s introduction describes a Model Context Protocol server that lets an MCP client automate browsers with Playwright and interact with web pages through structured accessibility snapshots. Its documented browser tools cover tasks such as navigation and form interaction. That is a description of supported capabilities, not a report of a particular test or of an author’s results.

Testing tools are opt-in: the testing capability adds test-oriented locator generation and assertions, such as checking that an element or text is visible. Browser storage management is separate: the storage capability provides tools for cookies, local storage, and session storage. The tool documentation and configuration documentation describe enabling these capabilities. Neither establishes that a chat or terminal command named /clear changes browser state.

How browser state can persist or reset

Playwright MCP documents two relevant browser-session approaches. Their state behavior is independent of any unverified /clear command.

Approach What happens to state How initial state is supplied
Persistent browser profile Login information can remain between sessions. Select a user data directory; the profile keeps its browser data.
Isolated session Storage state is lost when the browser closes. Supply storage state through configuration or a storage-state argument.

These behaviors are described in the Playwright MCP repository. A persistent profile can carry browser state into later work; an isolated session is suited to work that should not retain its session storage after the browser closes. Neither option tells you what a separate chat-context command does.

Does /compact mean the same thing as /clear?

No equivalence is established. In a September 7, 2026 reply in the OpenAI Developer Community, a representative identified as OpenAI_Support said: “/compact summarizes context; it doesn’t guarantee a clean slate in the same chat: https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/reference/slash-commands. We haven’t verified a command that fully clears context while retaining that chat and worktree.” This is a support reply, not a formal product specification; it does not verify that /clear exists or explain its behavior in any particular interface. Read the OpenAI Developer Community discussion in context, and consult the relevant product’s current documentation before acting.

How to check a workflow safely

  1. Identify the interface. Record the product, version, and exact place where you would enter /clear—for example, a chat command box or a terminal. Do not infer behavior from the command name.
  2. Verify the command. Look for that exact command in the interface’s current official documentation. If the product does not document it, do not assume it clears context or preserves the conversation.
  3. Separate chat and browser checks. Use the interface’s own documentation for conversation behavior. For Playwright MCP, review the configured browser profile and whether the workflow uses a persistent profile or an isolated session.
  4. Check browser storage deliberately. If the test’s purpose is to manage cookies or local or session storage, use Playwright MCP’s documented storage capability rather than assuming a chat command affects it.
  5. Confirm the outcome. Check the specific state you intended to change—conversation context, terminal display, or browser storage—before continuing. A change in one does not prove that the others changed.
