In a historical networking context, Cells In Frames (CIF) refers to a method described for exposing Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) functionality through existing Ethernet or Token Ring network hardware. In microscopy, the phrase can describe biological cells identified and followed across successive video frames. These are separate contexts, not versions of the same technique.
What does “cells in frames” mean?
The intended meaning depends on the subject being discussed. A networking source uses the capitalized name Cells In Frames (CIF) for an ATM-related approach. In biological imaging, “cells” are the objects being studied and “frames” are images captured at different points in a video sequence.
The shared words do not establish a shared mechanism: networking concerns carrying a communications service, while microscopy concerns interpreting images over time.
What is Cells In Frames (CIF) in ATM networking?
A technical dissertation describes CIF as a way to provide a native ATM application programming interface (API) on desktop systems using existing physical- and data-link-layer hardware. The examples named in its available description are Ethernet v2, IEEE 802.3, and IEEE 802.5 Token Ring network interface cards. The dissertation description places the approach in the historical effort to use ATM capabilities alongside IP over ATM.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is a historical, source-specific description—not evidence that CIF is a current networking standard, a widely deployed service, or a modern product. The available description does not establish implementation details, so it is best understood at the level of its stated purpose: providing access to ATM functionality through existing link hardware.
How are cells analyzed across microscopy frames?
In microscopy video analysis, a frame is one image in a sequence. Two distinct tasks are involved:

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Segmentation: identifying the pixels or regions belonging to each cell within an individual frame.
- Tracking: associating a cell in one frame with the corresponding cell in later frames, so its movement or other changes can be analyzed over time.
A 2018 study describes spatiotemporal cell tracing in terms of segmentation and tracking. A 2016 study describes locating cells in each video frame before extracting behavior-related features. These examples use “cells in frames” descriptively; they do not identify the ATM networking method. 2018 study · 2016 study
How can you tell which meaning is intended?
| Context | “Cell” means | “Frame” means | What the work does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Historical ATM networking | An ATM transmission unit | A term used in the data-transport context of the networking source | Describes access to ATM functionality through existing network interface hardware |
| Microscopy video | A biological cell represented in an image | One image in a time sequence | Identifies cell regions and may link them across images over time |
Look at the surrounding terms: ATM, Ethernet, Token Ring, or a network interface card point to networking; microscopy, image segmentation, video, or cell tracking point to biological imaging.

Is “cells in frames” a web-layout term?
A DevX glossary entry groups webpage layouts, image-processing language, cellular networking, ATM, and biological examples under the phrase. Those descriptions do not establish one coherent or broadly recognized definition, and the available evidence does not confirm “Cells in Frames” as a recognized modern web-layout technique. Treat that page as an illustration of the phrase’s ambiguity rather than as authoritative proof of a standard meaning. DevX glossary entry
