An NFT floor price is the lowest asking price for an item currently listed in a particular collection view. It is not the lowest recent sale, the lowest buyer bid, an average price, or a guarantee that an NFT will sell for that amount.

What sets an NFT collection’s floor price?

The floor is set by the cheapest active listing in the collection and marketplace view you are looking at. OpenSea Help Center defines it as “the lowest price for a collection’s items, rather than the average item price, and is updated in real time.” OpenSea Help Center

Because it reflects active asking prices, the displayed floor can change when a seller lists an item, changes its price, cancels a listing, or a listed NFT sells. A single unusually cheap listing can set the floor even if most items are offered for much more. Chainlink

How is a floor different from a sale or an offer?

These figures describe different events or intentions. A listing is a seller’s asking price; a sale is a completed transaction; an offer is a buyer’s bid. OpenSea presents floor price, sales, and offers as distinct analytics and activity concepts. OpenSea Help Center OpenSea analytics guide

#1 Best Overall
  • Floor price: the lowest current listing in the relevant collection view.
  • Sale price: the price recorded for a completed transaction.
  • Offer: a buyer’s bid, which a seller may accept or decline.

So if someone asks for the floor, they usually mean the cheapest current asking price—not the lowest recent sale or the lowest current bid.

What a floor price does—and does not—tell you

A floor is a snapshot of one listing, not an appraisal of every NFT in a collection. It does not show the average or typical price, prove that buyers are willing to pay that amount, or establish the value of a particular token. Individual traits and rarity can make one NFT more or less desirable than the cheapest listed item. OpenSea Help Center Chainlink

It is also different from a mint price. The mint price is set by a creator when an NFT is released; the floor refers to the cheapest item currently listed in a collection. Uniswap Labs

A low floor may reflect one seller’s urgency or an unusually low listing rather than broad demand. Chainlink also warns that coordinated listing and buying activity can distort apparent price signals. Chainlink

How to compare floor prices fairly

Two displayed floors are only comparable when you know what each figure includes and when it was measured. Check these details before interpreting a difference:

  • Collection and marketplace: Confirm that both views refer to the same collection and marketplace context.
  • Timestamp and period: A current floor is a snapshot; a chart for a selected period describes how the figure changed over time. OpenSea’s Analytics documentation lists periods such as 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, 1 year, and all time. Interface choices can change. OpenSea analytics guide
  • Chain and currency: Check the blockchain, payment-token symbol, and whether the price is shown in that token or converted to US dollars. OpenSea’s API documentation includes chain, token, token-unit price, USD price, and timestamp fields for floor-price history. OpenSea API documentation
  • Listings near the floor: Look at how many items are listed at or close to the lowest price. One isolated low listing is a weaker indication of broader pricing than a group of listings near that level.
  • Completed activity: Review recent sales, offers, and volume separately. Those measures add context, but they do not change what the floor itself means. OpenSea analytics guide Chainlink

OpenSea’s API supports historical floor-price queries across minute, hour, day, week, month, year, and all-time windows. Such history can show how listed floors moved; it still records listing-price information, not proof that a listed NFT sold at the floor. OpenSea API documentation
