It can be built into the motherboard, installed as an internal PCIe card, or connected externally over USB. A separate device can add useful connections, channel support, or headphone amplification—but it is an improvement only if it solves a limitation or meets a need in your setup.
What a sound card does
“Sound card” can mean the PC’s audio hardware generally, not just a removable card. The audio subsystem may include processing, digital-to-analog conversion (DAC), analog-to-digital conversion (ADC), amplification, and audio jacks. Which features are present depends on the motherboard or device.
For playback, an application produces digital audio. The PC’s software and audio hardware route it and may process it. If the destination is analog headphones or speakers, a DAC converts the digital signal to analog; an amplifier supplies the output level needed by the connected device. For a microphone or analog line input, the signal travels the other way through an ADC. The exact components and routing vary by system.
How PC audio is provided

When a separate sound card or USB device may help
- You need a particular connection. A device may provide a microphone or line input, optical output, or analog speaker connections your current setup lacks.
- You need a specific speaker configuration. Compare the device’s discrete speaker outputs with the channel setup you plan to use. Virtual surround for headphones is a different mode from discrete multichannel speaker output.
- Your headphones need more amplification. Look for the amplifier’s published specifications and confirm they fit your headphones and listening needs; impedance alone does not determine compatibility or loudness.
- You need an external option. A USB audio device avoids installing an internal card, which can be useful when there is no suitable expansion slot or you prefer an external connection.
- You have a diagnosed audio problem. If troubleshooting points to the existing audio hardware as the cause, a different device may address it. A separate card is not a guaranteed cure for every sound issue.
These are feature-based reasons to consider a separate device, not proof that it will sound better than every motherboard’s integrated audio. The cited product specifications document capabilities, not a controlled head-to-head listening comparison.

What to compare before choosing
- Connection and fit: Confirm that your PC has a compatible, available PCIe slot and enough clearance for an internal card, or a suitable USB connection for an external device.
- Inputs and outputs: Match the actual jacks to your equipment: headphone, headset, microphone or line input, analog speaker output, and optical or other digital output as needed.
- Channels and modes: Distinguish discrete speaker channels from virtual headphone surround. For example, Creative specifies 5.1 discrete speaker output and virtual 7.1 headphone surround for the AE-5/AE-5 Plus; those describe different output modes.
- Headphone amplification: Check the published amplifier specifications for the exact device. Creative lists support for 16–600 ohm headphones on the AE-5/AE-5 Plus; that range is specific to this product, not a general sound-card rule.
- Existing motherboard audio: Inspect your specific motherboard’s manual or specifications and compare its available connections with your requirements before buying.
- Software support: Verify current drivers and operating-system support for the exact model. Support can change, and the cited sources do not establish compatibility with every current OS release.
Example: what a discrete PCIe card can include
Creative’s Sound BlasterX AE-5/AE-5 Plus specifications describe an internal PCIe card with a Sound Core3D audio/DSP processor, ESS ES9016K2M DAC, Xamp headphone amplifier, microphone/line input, headphone/headset output, analog speaker outputs, and TOSLINK optical output. It supports 5.1 discrete speaker output and virtual 7.1 headphone surround.
Creative lists a 122 dB stereo DAC dynamic range, 116 dB headphone-amplifier signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and 0.0009% headphone-amplifier total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N). These are manufacturer specifications for this product; the page does not state a publication date. They are not independent test results or evidence of a universal audible advantage over integrated audio.

- Select the intended playback device. Open your system’s sound settings and make the sound card or USB device the default output if that is where your speakers or headphones are connected.
- Check device status. Confirm that the operating system detects the device and does not report a disabled or failed device.
- Check volume and mute. Unmute the device and application, and verify the system mixer levels.
- Check the physical connection. Make sure speakers or headphones are plugged into the output you selected and that cables and speaker power are connected.
- Check for an onboard-audio conflict. If integrated audio and a Sound Blaster device coexist, verify that the intended device is selected and that conflicting configuration is not preventing playback.
