A Python SyntaxError means Python could not parse your source code as a valid program. Start with the filename and line number, then inspect the marked line and the code immediately before it. The arrow is a clue to where Python detected trouble—not a guarantee that the character under it is the only thing you need to change.
What does this Python SyntaxError mean?
Python must parse your code before it can run it. A SyntaxError means parsing failed: the code does not fit Python’s grammar at the point where the parser detected a problem. The message may include the filename, line number, source text, and a marker showing the detected location. The current Python built-in exceptions reference also documents end positions; lineno and offset are 1-indexed, and end_lineno and end_offset were added in Python 3.10.
Exact wording and the range displayed can vary by Python version and environment. The core idea is the same: use the location and message to investigate, rather than treating the marker as a guaranteed edit instruction.

The arrow identifies where Python detected the parsing failure, which may be later than the omission that caused it. The Python tutorial explains that the parser displays an arrow at “the earliest point in the line where the error was detected.” That is a diagnostic location, not necessarily the exact character to edit.

For example, this code is missing a colon:
while True print('Hello world')
The parser marks print(), but the missing colon belongs after while True. The marked token is where Python can no longer parse the statement as written; the cause is the missing punctuation before it. See the Python 3.10.21 tutorial’s Errors and Exceptions section for this example.
How do I fix invalid syntax in Python?
- Read the final diagnostic. Confirm that it says
SyntaxError, and note the filename and line number. - Inspect the marked line and the line before it. Read the whole statement and its boundaries. A missing token on the preceding line can make a later token appear to be the problem.
- Check the structure. Look for punctuation the construct requires, paired brackets and quotes, and an expression that follows valid Python grammar. For example, a
whilestatement needs a colon before its body. - Make one plausible change and run the file again. If the error moves, treat the new location as evidence and inspect the surrounding code again. One correction may not resolve every syntax problem.
Is a SyntaxError the same as an exception?
SyntaxError is itself an exception type, but it describes a failure to parse source code. That differs from a runtime exception: valid syntax can parse successfully and then fail while the program runs. Errors such as NameError, TypeError, and ZeroDivisionError are examples of runtime problems. If the final line of a traceback names one of those instead of SyntaxError, diagnose the reported runtime exception rather than searching only for invalid punctuation.

Where can you practice?
The free Python documentation is the most direct reference for understanding the diagnostic and its examples. For structured instruction beyond this one error, No Starch Press lists Python Crash Course, 3rd Edition, a book with lessons, projects, and troubleshooting coverage. Its page lists a December 2022 publication date and ISBN-13 9781718502703. For offline recall practice, the publisher describes Python Flash Cards as a physical 101-card deck covering syntax, concepts, examples, and exercises; its page lists a January 2019 publication date and ISBN-13 9781593278960. Neither replaces inspecting and rerunning the code that produced your error.
