A preamp output sends a line-level audio signal from a preamplifier, integrated amplifier, or AV receiver to another device. The usual destinations are an external power amplifier or a powered subwoofer with a compatible line-level input. It is not a speaker output, and labels such as “PRE OUT,” “SUB OUT,” and “LINE OUT” do not guarantee the same volume control or audio filtering on every component.
What is a preamp output for?
A preamp output passes audio to equipment that will amplify or otherwise use the signal. Cambridge Audio describes its Pre Out connections as being for a power amplifier or active subwoofer in its Pre Out FAQ. Yamaha likewise documents receiver PRE OUT connections for an external power amplifier in its RX-V6A manual.
Because it carries a line-level signal, a pre-out is not meant to drive passive speakers directly. Connect it to an appropriate amplifier input or to a powered subwoofer’s line-level input—not to speaker terminals.
What can you connect to a pre-out?
External power amplifier
Use a pre-out to feed a separate power amplifier, which then drives passive speakers. Confirm that the amplifier has a matching input and that the source output behaves as intended for your system. Yamaha’s RX-V6A instructions identify an external power amplifier as a PRE OUT destination.
#1 Best Overall
- Converts phono signals: a turntable preamp that converts phono signals to line level signals. This state-of-the-art circuitry phono preamp can accommodate magnetic pickups with an input sensitivity of 3mV at 50K ohms
- Low noise operation: offers outstanding performance with it’s low-noise Audio operational amplifiers. The output is 2V max (p-p) at 10K ohms. It’s better to position the preamp close to the source to reduce unwanted noise and interference
- Connects to turntables: connect any Turntable to modern sound equipment without specialized phono input for amplifying music. For the receiver, This can be connected to speakers, computers, laptops and more
- Simple plug & play: This mini preamp has stereo RCA inputs and stereo RCA outputs. Connect the Turntable to the RCA inputs and ground. Then, connect the amplifier Receiver to the RCA outputs
Powered subwoofer
A powered subwoofer can accept a compatible line-level feed from a pre-out or a dedicated subwoofer output. The subwoofer must have its own amplification; a passive subwoofer cannot be driven by a line-level pre-out alone. Yamaha’s CX-A5200 manual documents powered-subwoofer connections using compatible RCA or XLR connections.
Pre-out and sub-out are not necessarily the same
A dedicated SUB OUT may apply filtering or bass management, while a general pre-out may send a full-range signal. The exact behavior depends on the model. For example, the Cambridge Audio CXA61, CXA81, and CXA81 Mk II manual says those models’ Pre Out sends the full frequency range, while their separate Sub Out has a low-pass filter of approximately 2.3 kHz. The manual leaves crossover adjustment to the subwoofer. That is a model-specific example, not a specification for all pre-outs; consult your component’s manual for its output and crossover behavior. See Cambridge Audio’s FAQ and linked product information.

When connecting a subwoofer, check whether it has a dedicated LFE or line input, what crossover controls are available, and whether the source output is filtered. Klipsch recommends a dedicated sub/woofer line output for a standard powered-subwoofer connection when available. Its subwoofer hookup guidance also cautions that combining LFE and speaker-wire inputs can damage some subwoofer electronics. Use multiple input types together only if both manufacturers’ manuals say that configuration is safe.
Check whether the output is fixed or volume-variable
A volume-variable pre-out typically changes level with the source device’s volume control, which matters when the output feeds a power amplifier or subwoofer. A fixed line output may remain at a set level instead. Do not infer behavior from a connector’s shape or the word “out”: iFi’s support FAQ, for example, documents one product whose RCA output is fixed at full volume while its 3.5 mm output is variable. Verify the function on your specific component before connecting it to equipment that could receive an unexpectedly loud signal.

- FV2 is a stereo RCA audio switch box with volume control, you can use it for 2 ways audio source input, select one output.
- No gain design: It matches power amplifiers, active speakers and some monitor audio devices very well with lossless sound quality
- High precision volume adjustment: with quality A10K potentiometer
- 2 IN 1 OUT RCA signal audio switch selector: It can select signal source without plug/replug cables
- Passive design: It is passive, it does not need power supply. Plug and play. [Passive design, there is no power circuit, there is no amplifier function. ]
Choose a compatible cable and input
Match the source output to an input on the destination. For unbalanced RCA connections, use an RCA audio interconnect; a stereo RCA patch cable is one documented way to connect a compatible preamplifier output to a subwoofer’s line-level input in the Harman/JBL subwoofer manual. Check the required cable length and the exact RCA jacks on both devices.
For balanced connections, use XLR only when both devices have compatible XLR connections and wiring. Yamaha advises choosing RCA or XLR based on the power amplifier’s available inputs and checking XLR pin compatibility in its CX-A5200 manual. An XLR plug fitting physically does not by itself establish that the pin assignment is compatible.

How to connect a pre-out safely
- Identify the source jack. Read the rear-panel label and the owner’s manual. Confirm that it is the intended pre-out, sub-out, or other line-level output, and whether it is fixed or volume-variable. Do not assume a recording or tape output behaves like a variable pre-out.
- Choose the destination. Connect a pre-out feeding passive speakers to a power amplifier input. For a subwoofer, use a powered model with a compatible line-level input; check for a dedicated SUB OUT or LFE connection.
- Match the connection format. Connect RCA to compatible RCA, or balanced XLR to compatible XLR with the correct pin wiring. Follow the manuals if the devices offer more than one connection option.
- Power down before wiring. Yamaha instructs users to unplug the receiver and turn off the power amplifier or subwoofer before making connections. Follow the shutdown instructions in both equipment manuals; see the RX-V6A instructions and CX-A5200 manual.
- Configure levels and crossover. After connecting, set the source volume, subwoofer level, and crossover according to the manuals for the source and destination. Do not assume the source applies bass management just because the jack is labeled PRE OUT or SUB OUT.
Before using more than one subwoofer input
Subwoofers may offer line-level, LFE, or speaker-wire inputs, but their safe combinations vary. Klipsch recommends checking the product manuals before combining LFE and speaker-wire inputs because some subwoofer electronics may be damaged by that arrangement. See its hookup guidance and follow the instructions for the exact subwoofer and source.
