A loudness knob changes the sound’s tonal balance—usually emphasizing bass and treble—to make music seem fuller when you listen quietly. It does not simply raise the overall volume. The exact effect depends on the equipment: some controls apply a fixed contour, while others vary compensation with the volume setting.
What does the loudness knob do?
It adjusts the relative level of parts of the frequency range rather than turning the entire signal up. Many stereo amplifiers use loudness compensation to boost bass and treble at low listening levels. The goal is to offset the way hearing perceives tonal balance differently as playback gets quieter.
That does not restore detail missing from a recording or make playback objectively more accurate. It changes the sound coming from your system to suit a particular listening level.
Why can music sound thin at low volume?
Human hearing does not perceive every frequency as equally loud at every sound level. Equal-loudness contours represent the sound pressure different frequencies need in order to seem equally loud. Extron’s explanation describes historical experiments comparing pure tones with a 1,000 Hz reference, including work by Fletcher and Munson and later research by Robinson and Dadson. At lower levels, low and high tones generally need more sound pressure relative to the midrange to seem equally loud.

A loudness circuit is intended to compensate for some of this shift by emphasizing low and high frequencies during quiet listening. Equal-loudness contours are not a promise of identical results for every recording or listening space: the cited explanation concerns pure tones in a free field and cautions that the contours do not necessarily describe noise bands or diffuse random noise.
How do loudness controls differ?
The label “loudness” alone does not tell you how a particular device’s circuit works. Check its owner’s manual for what the control changes and whether its effect varies with the main volume.

One documented amplifier example
The McIntosh MA6200 owner’s manual describes an independent control that increases bass and treble as it turns clockwise to help maintain frequency balance when music is played softly. It says the fully counter-clockwise position is flat, with no loudness compensation. That is the behavior of this model, not a standard shared by all loudness controls.
Is loudness the same as volume?
No. The volume control sets the overall playback level. A conventional loudness control changes the frequency balance, although some designs link the amount of compensation to the volume setting.

The word can also refer to other audio features. For example, THX Loudness Plus is a branded home-theater technology, not simply the stereo tonal control described above. THX says it compensates for tonal and spatial shifts when the volume is reduced, and describes adjustments to surround-speaker relationships. Do not assume that a feature called “loudness” on a multichannel system works like a stereo amplifier’s bass-and-treble compensation.
Should loudness be on or off?
Use it if you prefer the result, especially when listening quietly and the sound seems too thin. Try it at the low level where you notice that issue, comparing the setting on and off at a comfortable, similar perceived volume. This is a listening suggestion, not a controlled test. If the result sounds boomy, harsh, or otherwise less natural to you, turn it down or off.

If your control is independent of the volume knob, as on the documented McIntosh MA6200, you can set it separately. Other devices may link the compensation to the volume, so follow your model’s manual rather than assuming the controls behave alike.

Not universally. Its intended benefit is most relevant at quiet listening levels, when tonal balance can seem less full. Whether the change sounds better depends on the listener, recording, room, and audio system. At other levels, or with material that already has strong bass or treble, the extra emphasis may not be desirable. Treat the control as an adjustment to taste and listening conditions, not as an automatic upgrade.
