A Linux system administrator installs, configures, secures, monitors, and troubleshoots computers and software that run Linux, often organizational servers. It is a Linux-focused form of systems administration, but U.S. labor statistics and typical education figures available for this career describe the broader systems-administration occupation, not Linux-only workers.

What is a Linux system administrator?

A Linux system administrator keeps Linux-based systems available, usable, and secure. The role can include servers and the software and access controls that support an organization’s users and services.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not report Linux system administrators as a separate occupation. Its occupational profile covers “Network and Computer Systems Administrators,” a broader group whose responsibilities can include maintaining servers, computers, software, and networks. The BLS defines that group as professionals who “install, configure, and maintain organizations’ computer networks and systems.” BLS occupational profile.

What does the job involve?

Specific duties depend on the organization and how its IT work is divided. Common systems-administration tasks in the broader BLS occupation include:

  • Assessing system needs and installing operating systems, applications, and related hardware or software.
  • Configuring systems, applying updates, and making upgrades or repairs.
  • Monitoring performance, maintaining security, and creating user accounts and permissions.
  • Diagnosing issues identified by users or monitoring systems and resolving them.
  • Recommending technology purchases and, in some roles, training users.

These are broad occupational examples, not a checklist every Linux administrator performs. Administrators may work with other IT professionals, and some schedules include more than 40 hours a week or evening, night, or weekend work for monitoring, maintenance, or updates, according to the BLS.

How is the role different from a network administrator?

A systems administrator generally focuses on servers, software, system updates, performance, and user access. A network administrator focuses on the infrastructure that connects computers, such as routers, switches, cables, and network connections. The responsibilities can overlap: the BLS notes that some administrators oversee both systems and networks, while others specialize.

What education and preparation are typical?

For the broader U.S. occupation, a bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology or a related field is typical, though some employers require a postsecondary certificate or associate degree instead. BLS notes that relevant curricula commonly include programming, networking, and systems design. Employers may also require certifications related to the products they use; that does not make one credential universal for Linux administrators.

The BLS identifies analytical, communication, creative, multitasking, problem-solving, and technical abilities as useful in the broader role, including programming skills and the ability to work with different hardware and software. Requirements differ by employer, so use the target job description to identify the Linux distributions, commands, scripting languages, or infrastructure tools it expects rather than assuming one universal skills list.

Are Linux certifications required?

Not universally. The Linux Foundation’s career roadmap places Linux System Administrator in its Systems & Infrastructure path and lists Linux Foundation and Red Hat credentials among certifications in that roadmap. This makes certification one possible way to develop or demonstrate relevant knowledge, not a job guarantee or a mandatory qualification for every position. What are the U.S. pay and job outlook figures?

The BLS’s 2026 profile reports a median annual wage of $99,130 in May 2025 for U.S. Network and Computer Systems Administrators. It projects employment in that broad occupation to decline 4% from 2025 to 2035, from 323,600 jobs in 2025, while averaging about 13,400 openings per year over the period. None of those figures is specific to Linux system administrators. BLS occupational profile.

The BLS attributes the projected decline in part to routine tasks being automated, some work shifting to DevOps-focused developers, and outsourcing to Networks-as-a-Service providers. It also explains that many projected annual openings reflect replacement needs as workers change occupations or leave the labor force; openings can therefore occur even while total employment declines.
