*82 can temporarily show your caller-ID information for one outgoing call when your phone service blocks caller ID by default and supports the code. Dial *82 before the number you’re calling. It is not a universal cell-phone feature, so check with your carrier if it does not work.
What *82 does
*82 is a per-call override for caller-ID blocking on supported services. If your line is set to block your caller-ID information, dialing *82 before a number lets the called party receive that information for that call. Xfinity says its Voice customers can dial *82 followed by the destination number to cancel per-line blocking for one call, and that the name and number appear on the recipient’s Caller ID (Xfinity’s instructions).
The override is temporary: Xfinity says later calls remain blocked unless you use the code again. The code affects caller-ID presentation to the person you call; it does not make you anonymous to your carrier or the phone network.
How to use *82
- Confirm that your carrier supports *82 and that caller-ID blocking is enabled on your line.
- Open the phone dialer and enter
*82, followed by the full number you want to call. - Place the call. If the feature is supported, your caller-ID information should be available to the recipient for that call.
These instructions reflect Xfinity Voice guidance, not a guarantee for every mobile provider or calling method. Other carriers may have different instructions or may not offer the feature on your service.

*82 versus *67
The two codes serve opposite purposes on services that support them. Xfinity documents both as per-call controls: *82 allows caller-ID information through when per-line blocking is active, while *67 blocks caller-ID information for an individual call. Carrier support and instructions vary, so confirm the relevant code with your provider (Xfinity’s code instructions).
Does *82 work on every cell phone?
No universal compatibility is established. The code is a carrier or phone-service feature, not a setting guaranteed by the handset itself. Official instructions from providers apply to their named services; they do not prove that *82 works across all mobile carriers, plans, devices, or ways of placing a call. The AT&T star-code help page and Verizon’s caller-ID blocking FAQ describe provider-specific guidance. For available calling features, the FTC recommends checking your provider’s website or contacting customer service (FTC consumer guidance).

What to do if *82 does not work
- Check your carrier’s current instructions for the service and the way you are placing the call.
- Ask whether caller-ID blocking is enabled on your line and whether a per-call override is available.
- Contact the provider if the code is rejected or the recipient still does not see your caller ID; the feature may not be provisioned or supported for your service.
Does *82 hide your number from your carrier?
No. Caller-ID blocking controls what is presented to the called party; it should not be understood as hiding the call from the network that handles it. In an order on caller-ID privacy, the FCC explained that the calling number is not blocked from the carrier and that the terminating central office receives it (FCC Order FCC 94-59). That technical discussion is foundational context, not a current list of which carriers support *82.
