For the simplest setup, copy the movie to a USB drive and play it on a TV or Blu-ray/DVD player whose manual specifically lists support for that file’s format. If the TV cannot play it, connect a computer by HDMI; for a movie library you want to browse from several rooms, use Plex or a DLNA media server. A USB port alone does not mean a TV can decode every DivX file.
Check what the file actually contains
“DivX movie” can mean a file ending in .divx, or an AVI or MKV file containing DivX-encoded video. DivX also includes different profiles, and a file may have a separate audio codec or subtitle format. The extension alone cannot tell you whether a particular TV will play it: two AVI files can contain different video and audio streams.
Use MediaInfo or a similar media-inspection tool to check the container, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio tracks, subtitles, and whether the file is protected. DivX-certified devices are tested for DivX playback, but support depends on the device and profile; certification is not a promise that every file or audio/subtitle combination will work. Check the specific model’s manual or the DivX-certified device list.

| Situation | Good first choice | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Your TV manual lists the file’s format or codec | USB drive plugged into the TV | Simple and requires no computer to stay on, but the TV’s filesystem and codec limits still apply. |
| You have a compatible Blu-ray/DVD player | USB through that player | Check the player’s exact DivX support; not every Blu-ray player supports DivX. |
| The file is unusual or the TV rejects it | Computer connected by HDMI | Usually avoids conversion because desktop players can decode a broad range of formats. |
| You want to browse a collection on multiple TVs | Plex server and TV or streaming-device app | Convenient library browsing, but playback depends on the client and may require server-side conversion. |
| You want network playback without a library interface | DLNA server and a compatible TV or player | Can be free, though setup, subtitles, and format handling vary by server and client. |
USB playback on a TV or certified player
Use this when the device’s documentation names the format or codec and you want the least complicated route. DivX VOD is different from an ordinary local video: it may require authorization on a compatible DivX-certified playback device. DivX explains the device requirement in its DivX VOD television guidance.

Computer connected to the TV by HDMI
This is the strongest fallback when the TV’s decoder is the obstacle. The computer plays the file; the TV acts as its display and speakers. VLC supports a broad range of media formats, though no player should be assumed to handle every file or DRM restriction. For a compatible Apple TV, VLC’s app supports remote playback and network protocols including SMB and UPnP/DLNA; that is a separate network-player route, not direct USB DivX support on every television. See the VLC Apple TV app listing.
Plex for a movie library
Install Plex Media Server on the computer or compatible NAS that stores the files, add the folder as a Movies library, then install the Plex app on the TV or streaming player and sign in. The server must be available when you watch. Plex lists DIVX among supported library formats, but the client’s capabilities matter: it may Direct Play the original, Direct Stream by repackaging streams, or transcode by converting media for playback. Smart-TV support varies by manufacturer; Plex describes the format and client considerations in its Plex overview and media-format support guide.

DLNA for simpler network sharing
A computer or NAS can share media over the home network for a compatible TV or player to browse. Roku’s guidance lists tested server options including Plex, Serviio, Windows Media Player, Twonky, MiniDLNA/ReadyMedia, PlayOn, and Synology systems. Some servers transcode unsupported files; direct USB playback may instead require a converted copy. Consult Roku’s USB and network media guidance for its device-specific limits.

Try USB playback step by step
- Check the TV or player manual for supported containers, codecs, USB filesystems, and limits such as resolution or frame rate. Menu names and support vary by model.
- Format the drive in a filesystem the device supports. FAT32 and exFAT are common possibilities, not universal guarantees; verify the manual, especially for larger drives.
- Copy one test movie to the drive. Use a short, simple filename, then safely eject the drive from the computer.
- Connect it to the device’s media-capable USB port. Open the TV’s Media, USB, Video, or Source menu, select the movie, and test picture, sound, subtitles, and seeking.
Connect a computer to the TV over HDMI
- Connect the computer’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV, then select that input on the TV.
- Open the file in VLC or another desktop media player. Move the player window onto the TV screen, or set the computer to duplicate or extend its display.
- If sound still comes from the computer, select the TV or HDMI device as the computer’s audio output.
- Choose audio tracks and subtitles in the player. Playback controls remain on the computer, and the computer needs to stay on while you watch.
Convert only when direct playback is not practical
A useful compatibility target is an MP4 container with H.264/AVC video and AAC audio. MP4 is a container, not a codec; H.264 is the video codec and AAC is the audio codec. Plex identifies this combination as a typical direct-play baseline for smart-TV apps, but the exact limits still depend on the device. An external SRT subtitle file may work when embedded subtitles do not; if the TV cannot render subtitles, burning them into a converted copy is another option.

Conversion makes sense when USB playback fails, a client repeatedly transcodes or buffers, or you need a file that works across several devices. Re-encoding can reduce quality and take time, so do not convert a file that already plays well through HDMI or Plex. DivX’s desktop software advertises MP4 conversion and casting to DLNA-compatible devices, while noting that not every file works on every device: see DivX downloads and DivX 11.

The TV cannot see the USB drive
- Confirm the filesystem and drive limits in the TV manual, and check that the USB port supports media playback.
- Try a smaller drive with one movie, a simple filename, and a basic folder structure. A port may not supply enough power for some drives.
The TV sees the file but says it is unsupported
Check the streams in MediaInfo rather than relying on the extension. The container, video profile, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio codec, or subtitle format may be outside the device’s support. Test another known-compatible file; if only this file fails, try HDMI, a server that can transcode, or a converted MP4/H.264/AAC copy.

Video plays but there is no sound
The audio track may use a codec, channel layout, or bitrate the TV does not support, even if the video is compatible. Try another audio track if one exists, or convert the audio to a device-supported format such as AAC. Check the player’s specifications before choosing a format; support varies.
Sound plays but there is no picture
The video codec profile, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate may exceed the TV’s decoder capability. Try HDMI through a computer player or convert the video to H.264 within the device’s stated limits.

Plex or DLNA playback buffers
- Check Plex playback information to see whether the server is transcoding; conversion can strain an older server.
- Check Wi-Fi signal and network throughput, and use Ethernet where practical, particularly for high-bitrate files.
- Subtitles can affect how some clients play or transcode a file. Test without them to isolate the cause.
Subtitles do not appear
Try an external .srt file with the same base filename as the movie, UTF-8 text encoding, and a simple filename. Enable subtitles in the player. If the TV cannot render the subtitle format, use a player that can or make a copy with subtitles burned in.
DivX VOD will not play
VOD content may be registered or protected for a compatible DivX-certified device, unlike an ordinary unprotected local video. Use the authorized device and account setup; do not assume a generic player or conversion will remove DRM or make protected content playable.
Should you buy another device?
Try the equipment you already own first: a compatible TV or player for USB, then a computer over HDMI. If you want a permanent library, Plex or DLNA needs a computer, NAS, or server to remain available. A streaming box can add app choices, but its streaming-service support does not guarantee native playback of arbitrary DivX files; check the exact model, local-player app, USB/network options, and codec support before buying. Roku’s own documentation makes support and conversion dependent on the playback route, rather than promising universal DivX compatibility.
For only one or two older files, a premium 4K streaming box is often unnecessary. For a large collection or multiple TVs, prioritize a client that works with the chosen server and codecs. If the problem is an incompatible stream, changing the playback method or converting the file is more relevant than buying a box solely because it supports 4K.
