OpenNVR is a self-hosted network video recorder (NVR) for recording and reviewing IP-camera footage, with an AI platform for processing that footage. The project says cameras, recordings, and AI run on hardware the operator owns. That local-first design gives you control over where video is stored, but it also means you supply and maintain the cameras, host, storage, network access, and software.
What OpenNVR does
OpenNVR is software for managing IP-camera video, with an extensible system for AI models and related apps. The project describes its design around camera isolation, operator choice of AI models, and adapters that can extend the platform. These are the project’s descriptions of its architecture, not independently verified security or performance findings. OpenNVR’s project introduction describes it this way: “OpenNVR records your IP cameras and runs AI over the footage, on hardware you own.”
In practical terms, an NVR records camera streams so footage can be reviewed later. OpenNVR adds an AI layer, but the specific results you get depend on the selected model, host hardware, camera streams, and configuration. The reviewed setup documentation does not establish performance for a particular camera count, resolution, or retention period.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat open source and self-hosted mean here
Self-hosting means you run the software on hardware you control rather than relying on a vendor-hosted recording service. OpenNVR’s setup documentation describes a Docker-based deployment and stores recordings locally by default. That can give an operator more direct control over video storage, but it does not automatically make a deployment secure, private, or maintenance-free.

- Outdoor 4 is our most affordable wireless smart security camera yet, offering up to two-year battery life for around-the-clock peace of mind. Local storage not included with Sync Module Core.
- See and speak from the Blink app — Experience 1080p HD live view, infrared night vision, and crisp two-way audio.
- Two-year battery life — Set up in minutes and get up to two years of power with the included AA Energizer lithium batteries and a Blink Sync Module Core.
- Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
- Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).
The operator remains responsible for configuring camera access, deciding how the host and recordings are protected, managing storage, applying updates, and selecting and maintaining any AI models. A local deployment also depends on the reliability of your own host, network, and storage. The official configuration documentation says recordings default to ./recordings, relative to the Docker Compose file.

- A compatible IP camera: The guide calls for ONVIF or RTSP support. Check the exact camera model’s documentation; no particular model was verified here. Existing compatible cameras may be reusable.
- A Docker host: Docker with Compose v2 is required. The guide lists Docker Desktop for Windows and macOS, and Docker Engine 24+ with Compose v2 for Linux.
- Memory and disk: The project advises budgeting about 8 GB of RAM and 20 GB of free disk. It says much of the disk space is associated with AI model weights. These figures do not specify a camera count, recording duration, or performance target.
- Storage planning: Recordings are kept in the deployment’s local recording directory by default. The documentation does not provide a retention recommendation, capacity formula, or confirmation of NAS compatibility, so estimate storage for your own streams and retention needs rather than treating the setup figure as a recording-capacity target.
The project says OpenNVR can run on a Raspberry Pi 5, laptop, or server. That is a broad project claim, not evidence that those hosts perform equally across different camera loads or AI models. Choose hardware for your intended workload and validate it in your own deployment.

- Install Docker with Compose v2 for your operating system, following the guide’s listed platform requirements.
- Clone the OpenNVR repository as directed in the installation guide.
- From the cloned repository, run
./start.sh; on Windows, runstart.ps1. - Follow the launcher’s setup, then configure your supported camera and recording settings using the project documentation.
If you prefer not to use the launcher, the guide also documents a manual Docker Compose deployment. Consult the current installation instructions for the exact commands and configuration, since project setup steps can change.
Who should consider OpenNVR?
OpenNVR may suit someone who wants to run camera recording and AI processing on a machine they manage, is comfortable operating Docker, and is prepared to administer a security-sensitive system. It may be a poor fit if you want a fully managed service, do not want to maintain a host and its storage, or need independently established compatibility and performance guarantees for a particular camera or workload.

The OpenNVR introduction states that the platform core is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and its app and adapter SDKs under Apache-2.0. The project’s homepage says self-hosting does not carry a license fee, while certain business uses—such as embedding the platform in proprietary software, selling branded hardware with it preinstalled under particular conditions, or hosting a modified closed service—may call for its commercial license.
