“Web server codes” usually means HTTP response status codes: three-digit numbers that report how a server handled a request. The first digit identifies the broad category—information, success, redirection, client error, or server error—while the full code gives the more specific meaning. A status code describes the result, but it does not by itself identify the underlying cause.

What is a web server code?

When a browser, app, or other client requests a web resource, the server returns an HTTP response. Its status code is a three-digit integer from 100 through 599 that describes the result of the request and the semantics of the response, including whether it succeeded and whether content is included. The IETF defines these semantics in RFC 9110: HTTP Semantics.

The phrase “web server code” is informal. It usually refers to an HTTP status code, not a programming-language error or a complete explanation of what went wrong. The number is one clue about how the request was handled; diagnosis may also require response headers, the request method, server or application logs, and the surrounding circumstances.

What do the five HTTP status-code classes mean?

The first digit sets the class. The remaining digits narrow the meaning; they do not form additional classes. RFC 9110 gives the following class descriptions:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Class Meaning What it tells you
1xx Informational The request was received and processing is continuing. A response can include zero or more interim 1xx messages, followed by exactly one final response.
2xx Successful The request was successfully received, understood, and accepted. The result still depends on the request method.
3xx Redirection Further action is needed to complete the request, such as following a new location or using cached content.
4xx Client error The request has bad syntax or cannot be fulfilled; the issue is generally associated with the request or its authorization.
5xx Server error The server knows it failed or cannot perform the requested method, despite the request appearing valid.

A client must understand the class indicated by the first digit. If it receives an unrecognized code, it treats it like the corresponding class’s “x00” code; for example, an unknown 471 is handled as a 400-class response. Values outside 100–599 are not valid HTTP status codes, although software may use numbers outside that range internally for non-HTTP errors.

What do common web server codes mean?

200 OK: the request succeeded

200 means the request succeeded, but the response depends on the method. A GET response normally carries the requested representation; a HEAD response has representation headers without a response body.

301 and 302: permanent and temporary redirects

301 Moved Permanently indicates that the resource has moved permanently and the response supplies its new URL. 302 Found is a temporary redirect: clients should continue using the original URI for future requests because the change may not be permanent.

For redirects, method handling matters. Codes 307 and 308 preserve the request method; 302 and 301 may result in a method change under user-agent behavior. Use the specific code and client behavior rather than assuming every redirect works identically.

401 and 403: authentication versus refusal

401 Unauthorized means valid authentication credentials are missing; despite the name, it describes an unauthenticated request. RFC 9110 requires a 401 response to include a WWW-Authenticate challenge. 403 Forbidden means the server refuses the request. The server may know who the client is; the distinction is that 401 calls for authentication, while 403 is a refusal of access.

404 Not Found: the resource cannot be found

404 means the server cannot find the requested resource. A server may also return 404 instead of 403 to conceal whether a protected resource exists.

429 Too Many Requests: a rate limit was reached

429 indicates that the client sent too many requests in a given time. It is associated with rate limiting; the code alone does not specify a universal limit or the length of the waiting period.

500 Internal Server Error: an unexpected server condition

500 means an unexpected condition prevented the server from fulfilling the request. It signals a server-side failure, but the code alone does not identify the faulty component or cause.

502 and 504: upstream failure versus timeout

502 Bad Gateway means a server acting as a gateway received an invalid response from an upstream server. 504 Gateway Timeout means the gateway did not receive a timely response from upstream. Both involve a gateway and an upstream service, but one reports an invalid response and the other a delay.

503 Service Unavailable: temporary inability to handle the request

503 means the server is temporarily unable to handle the request, often because of maintenance or overload. RFC 9110 allows a Retry-After header to suggest when to try again; without that guidance, the code does not give a specific retry time.

How should you interpret a status code?

  1. Read the first digit. Identify whether the response is informational, successful, a redirect, a client error, or a server error.
  2. Read the complete code. Consult the specific registered meaning; codes in one class are not interchangeable.
  3. Consider the request method and response headers. A 200 response to HEAD, for example, has no response body, and a redirect can affect where and how the client retries.
  4. Use the code as a clue, not a full diagnosis. For a failure, examine relevant logs and response details to determine the cause.

Where can you check a code’s current status?

The IANA HTTP Status Code Registry is the canonical index of registered values and their specification references. It includes codes defined in RFC 9110 and extensions, such as WebDAV-related 207 and 423, 429 for rate limiting, 451 for legal restriction, and 511 for network authentication. Not every integer in the valid range is assigned; the registry marks some ranges unassigned and some values unused or obsolete.

The registry page reported a last-updated date of 2025-09-15 when checked. It listed 104, “Upload Resumption Supported,” as a temporary registration made on 2024-11-13, with an expiry of 2026-11-13. Because temporary assignments and registry entries can change, check IANA for their current status. For a readable reference to common codes, see MDN’s HTTP response status codes.
