To find out what users dislike about your app, analyze review text by topic—not star rating alone. Collect each review with its date, app version, language, rating and available device context; group comments into features or problems; estimate sentiment for each topic; then compare results across releases and verify representative reviews before acting. Reviews can reveal recurring trouble, but they come from a self-selected group and are not a representative survey of all users.
What app reviews can—and cannot—tell you
A low rating signals dissatisfaction, but it does not explain its cause. One person may rate an app poorly because it crashes; another may object to sign-up, privacy, speed or a missing feature. A store-wide average collapses those different experiences into one number.
Review analysis is most useful when it connects a complaint to the feature or issue involved. Google Play Console surfaces top trends and issues mentioned in reviews, and Google identifies categories such as stability, speed, usability, privacy, profile or sign-up, resource use, design, uninstall reasons and updates. These are useful starting points, not a universal ranking of what users hate.
Reviews are unsolicited and self-selected. People with unusually good or bad experiences may be more likely to write one, while silent users remain unrepresented. Treat a recurring theme as a lead to investigate, not proof that every user has the problem.

Get reviews from the right source
Google Play
The Google Play Developer API represents reviews with identifiers and comments, including user-comment fields such as review text, star rating, language, device information and timestamps. It documents operations to list, retrieve and reply to reviews. Developers can also inspect and filter feedback in Play Console and export reviews in bulk for customized analysis; see Google Play Console’s review analysis help and Google Play’s reviews page.
Apple App Store
The App Store Connect customer reviews API supports review retrieval for apps administered through the developer account. Its documented options include territory and rating filters, sorting by date or rating, and version-specific review lists; individual review details can be read by resource ID. Apple also documents customer-review summaries. These routes do not establish unrestricted access to the review history of arbitrary apps.

Keep the collection context
For each collection, record when it was gathered, the app and version, territory or locale, the API or export route, and whether text has been translated. Retain original review text wherever available alongside any translation. Google Play Console says reviews are automatically translated into the console language and provides a way to view the original, so do not analyze translated text as if it were necessarily the reviewer’s exact wording.
A practical workflow for finding recurring complaints
- Define the decision. Decide what you need to learn—such as whether a release caused crashes, whether sign-up is confusing, or whether users are asking for a feature. This determines the time window and useful labels.
- Collect text and context together. Store the original review, rating, timestamp, language, app version and available device fields. Do not reduce the data to an overall sentiment score before identifying what each review discusses.
- Normalize carefully. Detect language, identify duplicates and preserve originals beside translations. Treat very short comments as weak evidence: a brief “broken” may be a signal, but it rarely identifies what failed. Keep star ratings as a separate signal rather than a substitute for reading the complaint.
- Group reviews into interpretable topics. Start with categories such as stability, speed, usability, privacy, sign-up or profile, resource use, design and updates. Add app-specific topics when repeated comments point to them. A topic model can help organize a large collection, but inspect examples because it can split one problem across labels or merge distinct problems.
- Assess sentiment for each aspect. A review such as “The app is great, but login is broken” expresses different opinions about the app overall and about login. Attach the evidence phrase or sentence to the topic label instead of assigning one polarity to the entire review.
- Compare topics over time and versions. Track each topic’s frequency and sentiment by release and time period. A burst after a release is worth investigating; check whether it continues and whether it is concentrated in a particular version, device, language or territory.
- Validate and prioritize. Rank candidate issues using recurrence, severity, recency, affected versions or devices, and confidence that comments have been classified correctly. This is a practical rubric, not a universally validated formula. Read representative original reviews and corroborate high-impact findings with support reports, crash analytics, usability research or product telemetry before treating an automated cluster as an established product issue.
Why version and volume matter
Review volume and length vary substantially, which affects how much automation can reliably tell you. In a study of 10,713 selected popular Google Play apps, Sági and colleagues reported that 88% received 20 reviews or fewer per day during the study period; only 0.19% received more than 500 per day. The researchers gathered the data over two months in 2014, so these figures are historical findings about that selected sample—not current estimates for every app. Their sample’s median review length was 36 characters. The paper also reported highly skewed review volumes and review-length distributions, and observed review-count spikes immediately after new releases. These findings support checking release windows, but do not mean every app follows the same pattern. See Sági et al. (2017).

For an app with few, short comments, elaborate topic modeling may offer little advantage over a careful manual review. For larger collections, automated grouping can help surface patterns, but sparse or ambiguous evidence still calls for human checking.
What automated review analysis can do
Research systems have explored combining topic modeling, sentiment prediction, issue visualization and prioritization across app releases. TOUR, described by Yang, Gao, Zang, Lo and Lyu in 2021, was designed to detect emerging issues and sentiment changes across versions. Its authors surveyed 15 developers about the system; that indicates perceived usefulness among those participants, not proof of general product impact. Read the TOUR paper.

Automation is best used to organize and prioritize reading, not to replace it. A topic label is a hypothesis about what several comments mean. Check the linked original reviews, sample sizes and collection window, particularly when text is short, translated or mixed in sentiment.

- Coverage and permitted access: confirm which apps and review records the route can actually access.
- Date and version detail: check whether you can isolate the release or period where a problem may have appeared.
- Language handling: retain the original text and know whether translations are shown or analyzed.
- Aspect-level sentiment: determine whether positive and negative opinions about different features can be separated.
- Traceability: ensure each theme can be reviewed alongside example comments rather than presented as an unsupported label.
- Export and privacy controls: check what data can be exported and how it is handled.
