In Gears of War: E-Day, the central Omen and surrounding HUD symbols communicate gameplay information: damage direction, nearby explosives, hits, downs, kills, and reload timing. Their meanings depend on where they appear and which game or mode you are playing; the available official explanations do not establish a universal glossary for every Gears icon or emblem.

How to identify a Gears of War icon

Start with its location and timing. A symbol in the combat HUD is usually an actionable cue; an emblem on armor or in a customization screen may be visual identity, and a symbol on a tabletop die follows that game’s rules. Check the game and mode as well: the functions below are documented for Gears of War: E-Day unless stated otherwise.

  • Where: Is it at the screen edge, beside the reticle, over an enemy, on a map, or on a character’s gear?
  • When: Does it appear as you take damage, reload, hit or down an enemy, or approach an object?
  • Which game or mode: A similar-looking cue in another title or mode may not work the same way.

What the E-Day Omen means

The Omen is a damage-direction cue in E-Day, not only franchise artwork. The Coalition says that when the player is hit, blood sprays off the center-screen Omen toward the direction of incoming damage. While the player is down but not out (DBNO), a Downs Counter tracks remaining downs; a full Omen signals death. The Coalition highlights the counter’s usefulness in Horde Siege, where a team manages downs together. The Coalition’s E-Day gameplay update describes these functions.

The Omen is also an iconic piece of Gears imagery, but the cited official explanation does not define the meaning of every part of its design or establish that its gameplay behavior is universal across the series. Calling the design skull- or gear-like is a visual description, not an official explanation of its symbolism.

What the other E-Day HUD indicators mean

Yellow edge indicators and the explosive triangle

Yellow indicators at the edges of the screen point toward an imminent high-damage threat. A triangle appears on nearby grenades or explosives. These are distinct from the Omen: one warns about a threat’s direction, while the triangle identifies nearby explosive objects. The official E-Day accessibility guide documents both cues.

Hit, DBNO, and kill markers

E-Day has regular hit markers, distinct hit markers for shots that down or kill an enemy, and additional DBNO/Kill icons. The support guide lists these as separate configurable elements. It confirms their broad functions, but does not provide a complete graphic-by-graphic glossary in the cited material.

Active reload bar

The active reload bar shows the timing mechanic during a reload; it is not a faction badge or lore emblem. In E-Day, it is centered just below the reticle by default, and a setting can move it to the upper-right corner. The gameplay update describes the default placement, and the accessibility guide lists the available Centered and Top Right positions.

What COG tags signify

COG tags are military identification tags, and the replica tags described in E-Day‘s Collector’s Edition carry specific story details: they are engraved with Carlos Santiago’s name and “ES,” the Embry Star commendation awarded after his death at Aspho Fields. The Coalition’s June 8, 2026 Collector’s Edition announcement describes them as replicas of the tags depicted in the game. That context is more precise than treating COG tags as a generic HUD power-up.

Omen dice in the Gears board game

The board game’s omen dice are a separate case from the video-game HUD Omen. In the Fantasy Flight Games FAQ, version 1.1, dated April 23, 2014, an omen rolled by a Wretch during an attack spawns another Wretch. For the specified Troika Heavy MG attack, omen rolls have no effect. These are rule effects tied to the particular board-game action, not a general explanation of video-game symbols.

What is not established about franchise emblems

The official material cited here does not supply a complete lore glossary for the Phoenix Omen, the Locust emblem, or every player customization symbol. The E-Day guide mentions allied COG characters and enemy colors, but does not explain every faction insignia. Without a source tied to the specific game or item, an exact story meaning for an emblem should be treated as interpretation rather than canon.

For a less familiar icon, include the title and mode and describe where it appears and what is happening when it shows up. That context helps distinguish a HUD warning from a confirmation marker, a customization graphic, or a tabletop rule symbol.
