In standard Summoner’s Rift, the five positions—top, jungle, mid, bot, and support—describe where players are usually assigned and the work they commonly do for the team. A position is a map assignment; “role” can mean that assignment or a champion’s broader job, such as dealing damage, starting fights, or protecting teammates. These are strategic patterns, not fixed rules: champions and coordinated drafts can change how a position plays.
Here is what each position typically contributes, how it connects to the rest of the map, and what its Patch 26.1 role quest adds. The quest details are patch-specific and may change.
How the five positions fit together
Riot’s beginner guide presents top, jungle, mid, bot, and support as the recommended five-position framework for Summoner’s Rift. The assignments distribute players across the map and give the team different ways to gain resources, create pressure, and contest objectives. A position does not guarantee a particular champion type or fight strategy: the champion, matchup, game state, and team composition all matter. Riot Games’ How to Play guide describes the basic framework and objectives.

Top: manage a solo lane and bring your champion’s strengths to the team
Top is a solo lane. Riot characterizes top champions as tough solo fighters who protect their lane and focus on powerful opponents. In practice, the player works through the lane matchup, seeks an advantage without giving up too much, and later contributes according to the champion’s kit. Some top champions can engage or absorb pressure; others bring different forms of damage or utility. Top is not one universal team-fight job.

Patch 26.1 quest: The top quest rewards activity in the assigned lane. Completion raises the level cap to 20, adds experience and future experience gain, and grants a Teleport-related benefit. These are mechanics for Patch 26.1, not permanent properties of top lane. Riot’s Patch 26.1 Notes detail the rewards.
Jungle: clear camps, influence lanes, and contest neutral objectives
The jungler plays between the lanes, clearing neutral camps and looking for opportunities to affect lane pressure. Pathing is a response to the champion, matchups, vision, and unfolding game—not a single route that fits every match. A gank can help a lane, but it also costs time that could be spent clearing or moving toward another play.
Junglers also help the team contest major neutral monsters, including Drakes and Baron Nashor, whose rewards can affect the team. Timing and coordination matter: an objective is not automatically worth starting just because it is available. Riot’s beginner guide identifies these monsters as important objectives.
Patch 26.1 quest: Jungle progression uses the jungle pet system. Patch 26.1 adjusted Smite, camp interactions, and quest rewards; completing the quest grants movement speed in the jungle and river, plus gold and experience for large monsters. Riot’s patch notes specify the current-patch details.

Mid: control the central lane and look for safe chances to move
Mid is the central solo lane. Riot describes mid champions as high-burst picks that can contribute alone or alongside the team. Because the lane connects to both sides of the map, mid players often look for chances to roam or support their jungler. Whether a move is worthwhile depends on the lane state, vision, champion, and timing; leaving at the wrong moment can cost lane resources or put the player at risk.
Riot’s Patch 14.1 design commentary described mid’s roaming function this way: “Mid lane, at its core, is a lane that requires some amount of roaming to support junglers or side lanes.” That is dated design commentary from 2024, not a guarantee that every mid champion should roam at every opportunity. Riot’s Patch 14.1 Notes.
Patch 26.1 quest: Mid’s quest progress uniquely includes damage to champions. Its rewards include upgraded boots and periodic empowered recalls. Riot’s Patch 26.1 Notes.

Bot: turn gold and experience into a damage threat
Bot is commonly associated with a damage-carry pattern: its player often relies on gold and experience to become a major source of damage. Riot’s guide describes bot champions as vulnerable early and powerful after gaining resources. That describes a common progression, not a rule that bot must always be played by a marksman. Riot’s Patch 26.16 commentary notes mage picks in bot lane in both professional and regular play.

Patch 26.1 quest: Riot describes bot laners as gold-income carries. The quest provides upfront and continuing gold and moves boots to a role-quest slot, freeing an effective item slot. Riot’s Patch 26.1 Notes.
Support: enable teammates through protection, setup, and vision
Support usually partners with the bot-lane carry. The job is to help the team function through contributions such as protecting allies, setting up plays, and vision-oriented decisions—not simply to be a second carry with less gold. Supports can also roam to help other lanes, but the timing and amount depend on the match and current balance.
Patch 26.1 quest: Support progression uses World Atlas. Riot’s quest notes also identify benefits involving control-ward storage and cost. Riot’s Patch 26.1 Notes.

How role quests change the assignment incentives
As of Patch 26.1, queues with assigned positions give players the quest associated with their selected role. Top, mid, and bot have lane-phase quests; jungle and support progress through their respective jungle pet and World Atlas systems. For top, mid, and bot, progress includes actions such as minion kills, takedowns, plates, and turrets, with extra progress for actions in the assigned lane. These incentives encourage players to participate in their selected position, but they do not make lane assignments or professional drafts unchangeable.
Riot’s 2026 season preview discussed intended role-quest and role-agency changes, while the Patch 26.1 notes describe the live implementation. For exact current mechanics, use the patch notes rather than assuming a preview or an older guide still reflects the game. Riot’s 2026 Season One Gameplay Preview and Patch 26.1 Notes.

| Jungle | Between lanes, clearing neutral camps | Balance camp clearing with lane pressure and objective timing | Influence lanes and help contest Drakes and Baron Nashor | Jungle pet progression; completion adds movement speed in jungle and river and gold and experience for large monsters |
| Mid | Central solo lane | Build lane advantage and assess opportunities to move across the map | Contribute damage or team support according to champion and game state | Progress uniquely includes champion damage; rewards include upgraded boots and periodic empowered recalls |
| Bot | Bot lane | Gain resources to develop into a damage threat | Often provide major damage later; not restricted to marksmen | Gold-income quest with upfront and continuing gold; boots move to a role-quest slot |
| Support | Usually paired with bot | Help the lane and team through enabling play | Protection, setup, and vision-oriented play; may roam when appropriate | World Atlas progression, with control-ward storage and cost benefits |
The first four columns describe common strategic patterns, not fixed champion rules. The final column is specifically the Patch 26.1 system and can change in later patches. Riot’s patch notes.
