Intel node names such as Intel 7 and Intel 4 identify generations of semiconductor manufacturing technology; they are not literal measurements in nanometers. Intel says its naming system is meant to describe a broader balance of power, performance, and area rather than the length of one transistor feature.
What an Intel process node name tells you
A process node is a generation of manufacturing technology used to make chips. Intel’s current names—such as Intel 7 and Intel 4—label those generations. They do not specify a single physical dimension that can be read as a nanometer measurement.
Intel explains that for decades a process “node” name corresponded to the actual length of certain physical transistor features. The semiconductor industry moved away from that convention while continuing to use smaller numbers that evoke nanometers. Intel says its refreshed terminology is intended to provide a clearer, more accurate view of its process technologies. Intel Support: Intel 4 Versus Intel 7 and Intel Process Technology Naming
Does Intel 7 mean 7 nanometers?
No. Intel 7 is a process technology name, not a claim that a transistor feature measures 7 nanometers. Intel introduced the naming structure to represent a holistic assessment of improvements in performance, power, and area, rather than a direct physical measurement. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
As one example of how Intel describes a node transition, it said Intel 7 provides approximately 10% to 15% higher performance per watt than Intel 10nm SuperFin, based on FinFET transistor optimizations. That is Intel’s stated comparison between those two technologies; it is not a conversion formula for interpreting node numbers or comparing different manufacturers. How Intel 4 and Intel 7 compare
Intel’s published comparison illustrates why a node label alone is not enough to describe a process. For the specific Intel 4 versus Intel 7 comparison, Intel reports:

| Characteristic | Intel’s stated comparison |
|---|---|
| Logic-area scaling | Intel 4 delivers approximately 2X logic-area scaling of Intel’s high-performance logic library versus Intel 7. |
| Transistor performance per watt | Intel 4 delivers greater than 20% gain at the same power versus Intel 7. |
| Process feature | Intel says Intel 4 uses extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) extensively to simplify the process flow and improve yield. |
These are Intel’s own figures and claims for the named comparison, in the stated library and power context. They should not be treated as independently verified measurements or as a rule for matching Intel’s labels to another company’s labels. How to compare process technologies usefully
When assessing two processes, look for comparable technical data rather than trying to translate the node names. Relevant measures include:

- Logic density or area scaling: Check which library, design context, and kind of scaling the figure describes.
- Performance and power: Establish whether a claimed performance gain is measured at the same power, or a power reduction at the same performance.
- Process features: Technologies such as EUV can affect manufacturing flow, but the feature alone does not establish overall superiority.
- Other characteristics: Thermal behavior, cost, and additional process details can matter when reliable, matched data is available.
Intel’s chip-terms guide describes node names as closer to representations of density and/or performance increases than physical measurements. It also identifies transistor size and density, power efficiency, performance, cost, thermal management, and process features as factors that distinguish nodes. Intel chip-terms guide
The Intel sources cited here do not establish a matched cross-vendor dataset or a dependable arithmetic translation between Intel’s node names and another manufacturer’s labels. Similar-sounding numbers therefore do not establish equal dimensions, density, or performance.

Process node names are different from Intel processor numbers
A processor model name and its suffixes identify product information, not the manufacturing node. Intel’s consumer processor-numbering guide covers families, SKU numbering, generation indicators, and suffix letters. Letters such as H, U, K, or F describe product characteristics or positioning; they are part of a separate naming system from the process technology used to manufacture the chip.
