What F1 through F12 do depends on the active app, operating system, keyboard firmware, and whether the keyboard is set to prioritize standard F-key commands or system controls such as brightness and playback. Start by checking the key’s current mode, then consult the shortcut list for the app you are using.
What function keys are—and why their actions vary
Function keys are the keys labeled F1 through F12, usually arranged across the keyboard’s top row. Their behavior can be assigned by the application, operating system, keyboard firmware, or a combination of these. A key that opens Help in one application may perform a different action elsewhere.
On laptops and some compact keyboards, the top row may also control system features. The key marked with a brightness, volume, or playback symbol may perform that alternate action by default, while an Fn or Fn Lock control changes how the row works. The exact behavior depends on the keyboard and device.
Common function-key examples in Windows
These are Windows examples, not universal definitions. In File Explorer, Microsoft documents the following shortcuts:

Microsoft’s Windows shortcut reference lists these and other Windows shortcuts: Keyboard shortcuts in Windows. For another program, use that program’s shortcut reference rather than assuming the same key assignments apply.
Function keys in Microsoft Edge
Edge assigns its own actions to several function keys. For example, F1 opens Help, F3 finds text in the current tab, F4 selects the URL in the address bar, F6 moves focus to the next pane, F10 focuses the Settings and more button, F11 toggles full-screen mode, and F12 opens Developer Tools. These are Edge shortcuts, not definitions that apply across all applications.

How to use F keys on a laptop or keyboard with Fn
If pressing a top-row key changes brightness or volume instead of producing the expected F-key action, the keyboard may be prioritizing its alternate commands. Look for an Fn, Fn Lock, or F-Lock key and check the keyboard or computer maker’s instructions. Do not assume a particular Fn-lock combination works on every laptop.

Microsoft keyboards and Surface
On Microsoft keyboards that provide Fn or F-Lock, the control switches between standard function commands and alternate commands. Microsoft describes F-Lock keyboards as using the alternate commands when F-Lock is off and the standard function commands when its light is on. Some alternate commands can be customized with Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center, depending on the keyboard.
Surface keyboards and Type Covers can use top-row special keys as function keys when Fn is enabled. Behavior varies by model. Microsoft’s guidance is available in How do I use the Fn key/F Lock key/Alternate command keys?

Mac keyboards
On Apple keyboards, the top row controls built-in Mac features by default. Hold Fn or Globe while pressing a top-row key to invoke its standard F-key action. To make standard F-key behavior the default in macOS Ventura or later, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Function Keys and enable Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys. On earlier macOS versions, use System Preferences > Keyboard.
A non-Apple keyboard may not offer the same macOS setting; check its manufacturer’s documentation. Apple’s instructions are in How to use the function keys on your Mac.

Chromebooks
Chromebook top-row keys commonly control actions such as Back, Forward, Refresh, full screen, window overview, screenshots, display brightness, and media playback. Google documents keyboard customization, including F11 and F12 remapping on supported devices. Available actions and labels vary by Chromebook keyboard.

There is no single setting or key combination for every computer. First identify your keyboard model and whether its top row uses Fn, Fn Lock, or F-Lock. Then check the manufacturer’s instructions for changing the default mode. On a Mac with an Apple keyboard, use the Function Keys setting described above; other devices may use a dedicated lock key or model-specific controls.
Choosing a keyboard for frequent F-key use
If you are choosing a keyboard because you often use F1–F12, compare the features that determine how accessible those keys will be:

- Dedicated row: Check whether the keyboard has distinct F1–F12 keys or combines them with other controls.
- Mode controls: Look for clearly labeled Fn, Fn Lock, or F-Lock controls and check how they switch modes.
- Default behavior: Find out whether standard F-key commands or system controls are active by default.
- Compatibility: Confirm support for your operating system and device.
- Customization: Check whether the keyboard or operating system supports remapping the keys you need.
These factors can help you judge fit, but they do not establish a universally best keyboard. If a key behaves unexpectedly, identify the keyboard model and active app first; then check the relevant device and application documentation.
