Bluetooth codecs encode and compress audio so it can travel wirelessly from a phone or computer to earbuds, where it is decoded for playback. They matter chiefly for compatibility and for the trade-offs a particular implementation makes in sound quality, power use, and latency—not because a codec name alone guarantees better sound.
What does a Bluetooth codec do?
A codec is the method used to encode audio at the transmitting device and decode it at the receiving device. Compression helps audio fit over a wireless link with limited bandwidth. The phone or computer and the earbuds both need to support the codec, and the connection mode and settings can affect which one is actually used.
Codec support is model-specific. A Bluetooth version number by itself does not establish that a device supports a particular codec. Check the specifications for the exact source device and earbuds, along with their operating-system requirements and connection settings.
Do Bluetooth codecs matter for earbuds?
They matter if they affect whether your devices can connect using a codec or audio system you want, or if a given implementation’s quality, power, or latency trade-offs matter to your use. But codec support is only one part of the listening experience: it does not establish an earbud’s tuning, fit, stability, microphone quality, or battery life.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For casual listening, start by checking compatibility and whether the earbuds suit your needs for fit, sound, battery life, and features. For video or games, consider end-to-end audio/video synchronization and the product’s low-latency support; a codec name alone cannot promise a particular delay.
How the main Bluetooth audio codecs differ
| Codec or system | What to know |
|---|---|
| SBC | Sony describes SBC as the standard audio coding technology for Classic Audio Bluetooth devices and says all devices using Classic Audio support it. |
| AAC | A codec supported by some earbuds. Sony characterizes AAC as mainly used in Apple products such as iPhone; that statement describes Sony’s characterization and should not be treated as a universal platform rule. |
| aptX family | Qualcomm’s proprietary family includes variants with different characteristics. Qualcomm says aptX Adaptive supports adjustable bitrate and a low-latency mode; compatible source and receiving devices are required. |
| LDAC | Sony describes LDAC as its high-resolution audio coding technology. Whether it is used can depend on playback settings; Sony says a quality-priority setting may be required on the cited model. |
| LC3 | The codec included in LE Audio. Bluetooth SIG describes it as designed for high quality at lower data rates, while giving manufacturers flexibility to balance sound quality and power. |
Classic Audio, LE Audio, and LC3
Classic Audio and LE Audio are distinct Bluetooth audio systems: Bluetooth SIG says Classic Audio uses Bluetooth Classic radio, while LE Audio uses Bluetooth Low Energy radio. LE Audio includes LC3, and support for that audio system and codec must be checked on both the source and the earbuds.

Bluetooth SIG reports that listening tests found LC3 could deliver higher quality than SBC at the same bitrate, or similar or slightly better quality at less than half the bitrate. Manfred Lutzky, Head of Audio for Communications at Fraunhofer IIS, is quoted in the SIG’s LE Audio overview: “Extensive listening tests have shown that LC3 will provide improvements in audio quality over the SBC codec included with Classic Audio, even at a 50% lower bit rate.” These are test-based claims attributed to the standards organization and its quoted speaker, not a guarantee for every product or listener.
Check compatibility before choosing earbuds
For a concrete example, Sony’s WF-1000XM6 Help Guide lists SBC, AAC, and LDAC for Classic Audio A2DP music playback, and LC3 for LE Audio. Sony notes that LE Audio requires a compatible Android phone and that settings may be needed to use the desired connection or codec. This is an illustration of model-specific compatibility, not a recommendation that these earbuds are best.

- Check the source device. Look up the exact phone or computer model, operating system, codec support, and LE Audio support if relevant.
- Check the earbud model and connection type. Confirm support for the same codec or audio system; do not infer it from a Bluetooth version alone.
- Review settings. The device may need a particular playback or quality setting to use the codec you want. Nominal support does not prove it is active for a given connection.
- Compare the whole product. Consider fit, sound tuning, wireless stability in your environment, battery life at your intended settings, microphone, controls, noise cancellation, multipoint, price, and return policy.
Settings can change practical results. Sony notes that playback time may shorten depending on sound-quality settings and usage conditions; its guide also advises switching to a stable-connection setting if sound stutters and documents an LE Audio low-latency setting.

No universal ranking follows from codec labels. Qualcomm describes aptX Adaptive as offering adjustable bitrate and a low-latency mode, while Bluetooth SIG’s LC3 comparisons are specific to its listening tests against SBC. Those descriptions do not establish that one codec will sound best across all earbuds, sources, settings, and listeners. There is also no established market-wide figure here for how many current earbuds support each codec, or a controlled ranking of all major codecs across current earbuds.
