A camera’s image quality mode determines the file format and/or compression used to save a photo. Image size is a separate setting that controls pixel dimensions. The labels and available choices vary by camera, so check your model’s manual before assuming that “Fine,” “Standard,” or “RAW” means the same thing on every camera.

What does image quality mode control?

Quality mode controls how the camera records a photograph: it may select a format such as JPEG or RAW, a level of JPEG compression, or both. Image size, by contrast, refers to the recorded image’s pixel dimensions. Choosing the highest quality setting does not necessarily select the largest image dimensions; check both controls independently. Nikon’s learning material explains the distinction, while the exact menu options depend on the camera model.

What do JPEG Fine, Normal, and Basic mean?

On the Nikon cameras described in its materials, Fine, Normal, and Basic are JPEG compression tiers. Fine uses less compression and generally creates larger files; Normal is between Fine and Basic; Basic uses more compression and generally creates smaller files. Nikon gives approximate ratios of 1:4 for Fine, 1:8 for Normal, and 1:16 for Basic. These are Nikon examples, not universal ratios for all cameras.

Greater compression discards more image information. Differences may be easier to notice when a photo is enlarged, but visibility depends on the scene, processing, display size, and camera implementation. It is not guaranteed that a difference will be apparent in ordinary viewing. Some camera implementations also prioritize consistent file sizes, while others allow file size to vary with image content.

How does RAW differ from JPEG?

RAW stores sensor data in a camera-specific format—for example, Nikon’s NEF—rather than saving only a finished, processed JPEG. RAW files are intended for later processing and may allow more flexibility in adjusting settings such as white balance and contrast. They may require compatible software to view or edit.

JPEG is a processed, compressed file that is broadly viewable and convenient for sharing. If your camera offers RAW+JPEG, it saves a RAW file and a JPEG copy for each shot. That gives you a ready-to-view version alongside a file for later editing, but uses more storage. Whether the camera displays the JPEG or another version during playback is model-dependent; check its manual.

How should you choose a mode?

Mode or setting Useful when Trade-off
High-quality JPEG, such as Fine where offered You want a processed file that is easy to view and share. It generally uses more space than a more-compressed JPEG tier; the exact file size varies.
More-compressed JPEG, such as Normal or Basic where offered You want to reduce storage use and accept greater compression. It saves space but may show compression effects more readily, particularly when enlarged.
RAW You plan to process photos and want flexibility with certain adjustments. Files need compatible software and typically require more storage than JPEG.
RAW+JPEG You want an editable source and a ready-to-view copy. Saving two versions uses additional storage.

For straightforward sharing, a high-quality JPEG is a practical starting point if your camera offers one. Choose RAW when you intend to edit and have a workflow for processing the files. RAW+JPEG suits a workflow that needs both versions, provided the additional storage is acceptable. These are general trade-offs, not recommendations tested on a particular camera.

Why do file sizes and photo counts vary?

Storage use depends on the format, compression and image dimensions, as well as camera settings and the photo’s content. Two JPEGs made with the same settings can differ in size, so a quality-mode label alone cannot promise an exact number of photos per card or a universal megabytes-per-photo figure. Nikon’s manuals describe model-specific options and storage behavior; Sony’s camera help guide also illustrates that another manufacturer may use different labels and settings. Consult the guide for your exact model for its menu terminology and any file-count estimates.

If you need more room, a more-compressed JPEG setting or smaller image dimensions can reduce storage use, with a trade-off in compression or pixel dimensions. Keep the distinction clear: changing image size changes dimensions; changing quality may change format or compression. A memory card provides storage, but it does not improve image quality. Check the camera manual for compatible card formats, speeds, and capacities before buying one.
