Trail cameras in a remote Guatemalan cloud forest reportedly captured a margay, a small wild cat. The claim appears in a February 25, 2026, Green Matters report attributing the sighting to an Instagram post by Coral Maya Conservation. The exact match to the headline and the description “once-in-a-decade” have not been independently confirmed, so that phrase should not be read as a measured frequency.

What did the cameras capture?

The likely subject is a margay (Leopardus wiedii), according to Green Matters’ February 25, 2026 report. The report says the camera-trap images came from a remote Guatemalan cloud forest and attributes the capture to a Coral Maya Conservation Instagram post. This is secondary reporting; the underlying post has not been independently verified here.

The headline’s “once-in-a-decade” wording is not supported by a verified frequency study or primary-source statement. It conveys rarity, but it should not be treated as evidence that margays are photographed in Guatemala exactly once every ten years.

Why is a margay sighting notable?

Margays are elusive wild cats, and a camera-trap image can document their presence in habitat where direct sightings are difficult. A separate peer-reviewed paper provides relevant context: José Fernando Moreira-Ramírez, Rony García-Anleu, Gabriela Ponce-Santizo, and Melvin Mérida reported a margay in the cloud forest of the Mario Dary Rivera University Biotope for Quetzal Conservation in Baja Verapaz. That paper documents an earlier event, not the capture described in the 2026 news report.

What an earlier Guatemalan camera-trap study found

The 2021 paper, “First record of margay (Leopardus wiedii) in cloud forest of Guatemala”, describes fieldwork conducted from February 21 to March 8, 2008. Its figures apply only to that study:

  • Seven camera traps were deployed for 16 consecutive days.
  • The authors reported 110 trap-nights of effort.
  • They recorded one margay at 1,770 metres elevation in the biotope.

The authors characterized their finding as the first confirmed evidence of margay in the cloud forest of that particular biotope and, at the time of publication, the highest-altitude observation for the species in Guatemala. Those are bounded claims from the 2021 paper, not a statement about every later record or the separate 2026 report.

How trail cameras help document elusive wildlife

Remote cameras record animals that may be nocturnal, crepuscular, or simply hard to observe directly. The 2021 study recommended long-term camera-trap monitoring in the biotope to investigate elusive species with nocturnal-crepuscular habits and inform conservation strategies. A camera image can establish evidence of an animal’s presence at a location, but a single capture does not by itself show how many animals live there, how often they use the area, or whether their population is increasing.

For readers considering a wildlife trail camera, the relevant point is the category: remotely triggered cameras are used to document animals without a person continuously present. The cited study does not endorse a consumer model or establish that any retail camera would reproduce its research protocol or results.
