The Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) was an industry organization that created guidelines and a certification program to help connected-home devices share and play media over a home network. DLNA dissolved in 2017; its legacy guidelines remain available, but they are no longer being updated.
What does DLNA mean?
DLNA stands for Digital Living Network Alliance. Microsoft describes it as a cross-industry organization of consumer-electronics, computing, and mobile-device companies focused on interoperability among home entertainment devices. DLNA itself said its purpose was to build industry consensus around interoperability in connected homes. (Microsoft technical glossary; DLNA white paper)
In practical terms, DLNA addressed sharing personal digital media—such as music, photos, and video—between compatible devices on a local home network. A device could provide media, browse or control another device, or render and play the media.
What did DLNA do on a TV or other device?
DLNA guidelines described how compatible devices should behave and communicate so they could find one another and exchange or play media on a home network. For example, a television might play a video stored on a computer or networked media server, provided both devices supported the relevant formats and features.

DLNA was not one app or a single streaming protocol. Implementations used technologies that included UPnP for discovery and control, and HTTP or RTSP for streaming. The exact experience depended on the devices, supported media formats, and their implementations. (Microsoft technical documentation)
What is the difference between DLNA support and DLNA certification?
A product may advertise a media-sharing or streaming feature without having passed DLNA’s certification process. According to DLNA’s FAQ, a device had to pass that process to claim “DLNA Certified” and use the certification mark. A general streaming capability alone does not establish that certification. DLNA published interoperability guidelines, while certification tested products against those guidelines. The IEC 62481 series includes guidance for home-network device interoperability: IEC 62481-2:2017 covers media-format profiles for audio, images, and audiovisual media, and IEC 62481-3:2017 covers link protection for streams between devices on a DLNA network. IEC lists the 2017 edition of IEC 62481-2 as valid, with a stability date of 2037. (IEC catalog)

DLNA announced on January 5, 2017, that it had fulfilled its mission and would dissolve as a nonprofit trade association. Its announcement said certification services would continue through SpireSpark International. The current certification site says DLNA has dissolved and that SpireSpark provides certification, testing services, and related tools with DLNA’s permission. The distinction is important: the organization is dissolved, but legacy certification services and materials have continued through a successor provider. DLNA’s FAQ says its latest Guidelines would remain available without further updates. (DLNA FAQ)

- “DLNA Certified” refers to certification against DLNA’s guidelines, not simply the ability to stream something.
- A DLNA-related feature listing may indicate a particular media-sharing capability, but it does not by itself establish certification or guarantee that two specific devices will work together.
- Compatibility in practice depends on the devices’ supported formats, features, and implementations, so check the product documentation for the exact media and functions you need.
DLNA reported in 2017 that nearly 4 billion units had been certified across more than 25,000 device models during the preceding 13 years. That is a historical figure attributed by the organization to its then-chairman and president, Stephen Palm—not a current count. (DLNA announcement)
