Hardware and assembly are important, but the final retail price also reflects engineering and software investment, intellectual-property licensing, supply-chain conditions, configuration, the manufacturer’s margin goals, and the market position it wants the phone to occupy. There is no universal formula that turns a bill of materials into a retail price.
Start by separating the costs and prices
A bill of materials (BOM) estimates the cost of a phone’s components and, in some estimates, assembly. It is a useful snapshot of hardware inputs, not a complete accounting of what it takes to bring a phone to market.
Factory cost, the price a manufacturer charges a reseller, and the price a customer pays are different figures. The last can also reflect distribution, warranty, marketing, taxes, retailer or carrier economics, and temporary offers. Subtracting an estimated BOM from a phone’s retail price therefore does not reveal the manufacturer’s per-phone profit.
Historical analysis from the World Intellectual Property Organization separates factory cost from categories such as software and research and development, as well as standard-essential-patent licensing. Its examples explain why hardware alone is not the whole cost picture; they are based on older models and should not be treated as current cost shares for today’s flagships.

Hardware and configuration set a moving baseline
A flagship may include a display, processor or system-on-chip, memory and storage, camera modules, radio-frequency components, battery, enclosure, sensors, and assembly. Their relative costs vary with the design, supplier, production yield, capacity, and market conditions. A higher-storage version can have a different component mix from the base model, so one configuration’s BOM should not be applied to another.
Memory costs illustrate how quickly the mix can change
In an August 10, 2026 analysis, TrendForce estimated that the 256 GB iPhone 18 Pro’s BOM could be about 38% higher than its predecessor’s, attributing the projected increase chiefly to memory. This is an industry analyst’s estimate for a forthcoming model—not an audited cost breakdown or a forecast of the phone’s retail-price increase.
In a related analysis, TrendForce estimated memory’s share of the BOM for 256 GB iPhone Pro models at around 10% a year earlier and approximately 34% in 3Q26, with more than 40% projected for 1H27. The later figure is a projection, and all three are estimates tied to the named capacity and time periods.

Counterpoint Research reported that smartphone memory prices rose by more than 80% quarter over quarter in Q2 2026, according to its Memory Price Tracker. The firm says the increase changed the BOM structure of 2026 phones. It discusses tier-specific pricing and using more cost-optimized NAND in higher-capacity models as possible OEM responses, not as choices every manufacturer will make.

Designing and developing a phone involves work that a component teardown cannot show. Software and research and development are among the cost categories identified in WIPO’s historical analysis, alongside licensing for standard-essential patents. The available evidence does not establish a universal current percentage for these categories across flagship phones.
Supply chains and trade rules can affect cost and availability
Supplier prices, production capacity, shortages, manufacturing yields, and trade rules can change what it costs to source or build a phone—and whether parts are available when needed. In its FY2024 Form 10-K, Apple said trade restrictions can increase costs for products, components, and raw materials. It also disclosed that substantially all of its manufacturing is performed in whole or in part by outsourcing partners located primarily in mainland China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

Manufacturers choose how to position and price a phone
When costs rise, a manufacturer can try to pass them on to customers, absorb some of them through a lower margin, seek different suppliers or components, change prices between configurations, or discontinue models that no longer make economic sense. These are possible responses, not a fixed industry rule.
For example, TrendForce projected that Apple might accept some gross-margin pressure to keep the forthcoming iPhone 18 lineup more affordable and preserve shipment volume. It also suggested Android vendors with less room to absorb higher costs could pass on more of them. Those are analyst expectations published in August 2026, not confirmed company decisions. Counterpoint’s discussion of tier pricing and component optimization is likewise a set of possible responses to memory costs.

Beyond costs, a brand decides where a phone should sit in its lineup and how it should compete. Product differentiation and the price range a company seeks to occupy can inform that decision, but the sources cited here do not quantify how much design, brand, ecosystem, or software contributes to a current flagship’s price.

A BOM estimate for one phone cannot substitute for a retail-price comparison. To compare two flagships fairly, match the relevant details:
- Market and purchase date: prices vary by country, currency, and timing.
- Configuration: compare the same storage capacity and similar feature tier.
- Price type: distinguish the listed retail price from a carrier-financed amount or a temporary promotion.
- Purchase terms: account for the retail channel, warranty, and software-support terms.
Counterpoint’s June 4, 2026 report on U.S. smartphone prices provides market context, not a live, verified cross-brand price list. Local taxes, carrier offers, and promotions can also affect what a particular buyer pays.
Putting the price together
In practical terms, a manufacturer weighs the costs of designing, sourcing, building, licensing, distributing, supporting, and selling a particular configuration against expected demand, competitors, desired margins, and conditions in each market. The evidence supports those as relevant factors, but it does not provide one formula—or a complete current cost allocation—that applies to every brand and flagship.
