It depends on how you use Ollama. Ollama says content processed by a model running locally stays on your device and is not collected, stored, transmitted, or accessible to the company. With Ollama Cloud, your prompt and response are sent to hosted compute for processing. Ollama says cloud content is handled transiently, not retained beyond request fulfillment, and not used to train models. Separately, the company describes collecting account and service metadata.
What data does Ollama collect?
Ollama’s Privacy Policy, last updated March 2026, distinguishes model content from information used to operate its services. It says prompts, responses, model interactions, and other content processed locally are not collected, stored, transmitted, or accessible to Ollama.
The policy separately lists information that may be collected or processed:
- Account details: name, email address, user ID, and password.
- Payment information: processed by Stripe.
- Communications: for example, support requests.
- Device and service information: device and browser details, app version, request counts, diagnostic metadata, and model-download information.
- Network and web data: IP address, general location, and cookies.
Ollama says its diagnostic metadata does not include prompt or response content. Its policy also says support requests should not include prompts or responses unless you choose to provide them. Account information, billing records, support communications, and metadata have separate retention criteria; the policy’s cloud-content retention statement does not mean that every category of information is immediately deleted.

Local inference and cloud inference send different data
Ollama can run models on your computer or route requests to models hosted by Ollama. “Using Ollama” therefore does not, by itself, tell you where a particular request is processed. The key question is whether the model is running locally or using Ollama Cloud.
| Question | Local model, according to Ollama | Ollama Cloud, according to Ollama |
|---|---|---|
| Where is inference performed? | On your device. | On Ollama’s hosted compute. |
| Does prompt content leave your device? | Ollama says locally processed content is not transmitted to or accessible by the company. | The request content is sent to the cloud service for inference. |
| What does Ollama say about retention? | Ollama says it has no access to locally processed model content. | Content is processed transiently and not retained beyond the time needed to fulfill the request. |
| Is sign-in required? | The cloud announcement says you can stay signed out when not using cloud; product requirements may change. | Ollama’s Cloud models announcement says cloud models require signing in to ollama.com. |
| Where is processing located? | On your device. | Ollama says models are hosted primarily in the United States, with Europe and Singapore used for additional capacity. |
| Main practical constraint | Speed depends on your hardware; large models may be slow without a strong GPU. | Models run on Ollama servers, so you do not need to download their weights. |
These distinctions are based on Ollama’s Privacy Policy, Pricing page, Cloud models announcement, and Linux download guidance. Check the current policy and product documentation when making a decision, since service behavior and requirements can change.

What happens to prompts sent to Ollama Cloud?
Ollama says cloud prompts and responses are processed transiently to provide inference, are not retained beyond the time needed to fulfill the request, and are not used to train AI models. These are the company’s published statements, not an independent verification of cloud handling. The Pricing page also says partner providers are required to follow no-logging, no-training, and zero-data-retention policies.
Cloud processing can involve more than one region: Ollama says its hosted models are primarily in the United States, with Europe and Singapore used for additional capacity. The available information does not establish that every request is processed in one fixed country.

How to choose between local and cloud use
Choose local inference when keeping model content on your device is the priority
Ollama says content processed by local models is not sent to the company. This option depends on your computer: Ollama notes that performance varies with hardware and that larger models may be slow without a strong GPU. Its Linux download guidance discusses local setup; exact installation steps depend on your operating system.
Choose cloud inference when you need hosted compute
Cloud models avoid downloading model weights and run on Ollama’s servers, but the prompt must be sent to the service for processing. Ollama says cloud access requires signing in. Weigh that data flow against the convenience and compute available through the hosted service.

What the privacy statements do—and do not—establish
Ollama’s policy says: “We don’t see your prompts or data when you run locally.” That is a statement from Ollama Inc.’s Privacy Policy, last updated March 2026. The local-versus-cloud distinction and the cloud retention and training descriptions in this article likewise reflect Ollama’s published policy and product pages.
Those documents are not an independent security audit. No network traffic inspection or external technical verification is established here, so the policy should be read as the company’s stated practices rather than proof from a third-party test. For sensitive work, distinguish on-device inference from cloud inference and review the current policy before sending content to a hosted service.
