wkhtmltopdf supports a practical subset of older CSS, not the full modern web platform. Its 0.12.x releases use an old Qt WebKit engine: ordinary document flow, tables, floats, positioning, typography, colors, borders, backgrounds, and basic print styling are the safer choices. Do not rely on modern flexbox or CSS Grid for a production layout. Compatibility depends on the exact wkhtmltopdf binary and Qt build, so test the output you will actually deploy.
Why wkhtmltopdf CSS support is limited
wkhtmltopdf converts HTML into PDF or image files using Qt WebKit. The age of that embedded browser, rather than the age of the CSS specification, sets the practical compatibility ceiling. The wkhtmltopdf project status says Qt 4, which the tool uses, has not been supported since 2015, and that its WebKit has not been updated since 2012. The project’s downloads page lists the 0.12.6 series as stable, released June 11, 2020. The GitHub repository was archived on January 2, 2023.
Those dates matter when a page looks correct in a current Chrome, Firefox, or Safari but breaks in a generated PDF. A modern browser’s CSS behavior is not a reliable proxy for wkhtmltopdf’s. Nor does a successful PDF generation mean that all styles were applied: unsupported declarations may simply be ignored without an error.
CSS features that are the safest baseline
For a template that must work in wkhtmltopdf, start with CSS patterns that were established in older browsers. These are practical guidance, not a guarantee for every property, Qt build, or document.

Use the table as a starting point, not as an exhaustive property matrix. The project does not publish a complete CSS-property support matrix in the cited documentation; edge cases can vary between builds.
Flexbox, Grid, and modern CSS
Flexbox
Do not treat modern flexbox as a safe baseline. A project forum response says version 0.12.4 does not support flexbox. A GitHub issue for 0.12.6 reports flexbox failure even with patched Qt and prefixed declarations. These reports do not prove that every flex-related declaration fails on every build, but they are strong reason not to make an essential layout depend on it.
If a page currently uses display: flex, wrapping, alignment, or distribution to arrange critical content, create a fallback using tables, floats, or normal flow and check it in the PDF. A syntactically valid stylesheet can still yield a structurally different page when the renderer ignores the layout declaration.
CSS Grid
CSS Grid should also be treated as unsupported for dependable output. The available project material does not establish a reliable Grid implementation, and the embedded browser’s age makes current browser behavior an unsafe assumption. Rework a report or invoice layout into simpler columns, tables, or block elements if it must stay on wkhtmltopdf.

Other newer features
Gradients, transforms, animations, pseudo-elements, media queries, calc(), SVG styling, web fonts, and advanced selectors require caution. They may work in a particular build or fail partially; the evidence does not establish a universal result for each property. Keep a plain fallback for important content and verify the specific effect in generated files. Avoid describing wkhtmltopdf simply as supporting “CSS3”: that label covers too many features and conceals important differences.
Why Bootstrap and Tailwind layouts can break
Frameworks emit CSS for the browser engines they target. A template that depends on flexbox or Grid for columns, spacing, or responsive rearrangement can lose its intended structure when wkhtmltopdf does not apply those declarations. Utility classes do not bypass the renderer’s limitations; the resulting PDF is still governed by the same old WebKit engine.
Inspect the compiled CSS used by the template, not just its framework name. Identify which declarations are essential to layout, then replace the risky ones with simpler alternatives or generate PDFs in a current browser engine. If a framework’s styles include fallback rules, verify that the fallback actually controls the page at the viewport and print conditions used for capture.
JavaScript and page readiness
wkhtmltopdf exposes options including --run-script and --window-status, but having those options does not make its JavaScript runtime current. Modern scripts may rely on APIs that the old engine lacks. A page can therefore have both CSS and JavaScript compatibility problems, especially when content is built dynamically.

The project status recommends Puppeteer or another modern wrapper for dynamic JavaScript pages. For a static report, simpler HTML and CSS may be enough; for a page whose content appears only after modern client-side code runs, use a renderer with a current browser engine rather than assuming a wait option will fix the runtime.
Build differences and deployment checks
“wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6” alone may not fully describe the renderer you are using. Builds can differ in whether Qt is patched, and the usage documentation notes that some options require patched Qt. Patched versus unpatched Qt can affect available behavior. Record and test the exact binary installed in production rather than relying on a developer’s local package or another machine’s results.
Before rolling out a template, make a small test set that exercises the layout features and assets that matter:
- Generate a one-page document with the core typography, widths, table or float layout, and backgrounds.
- Generate a multi-page document with long tables, page-break rules, headers or footers if used, and content close to page boundaries.
- Test local and remote images, fonts, and stylesheets under the same runtime conditions as production.
- Include any flexbox, Grid, media-query, SVG, or JavaScript-dependent content that cannot be removed.
- Run the test with the exact production executable and Qt build, then inspect the PDF visually rather than checking only the process exit status.
Re-run this set after changing the binary, template, CSS framework, fonts, or asset-loading setup. A PDF that opens successfully is not sufficient evidence that its layout is correct.

Choosing whether to keep wkhtmltopdf
Keeping wkhtmltopdf can be reasonable when its older CSS baseline fits the document, the output is stable in the exact deployed build, and replacing the renderer would add more risk than value. It is a poor fit when the template depends on current browser CSS, substantial client-side JavaScript, or newer responsive layout behavior.
Compare alternatives on the requirements that affect your output, not only on a label such as “HTML to PDF.” Consider the age and capabilities of the HTML/CSS engine, JavaScript execution and page-load control, print pagination and headers or footers, maintenance and security status, and deployment footprint. The wkhtmltopdf project recommends Puppeteer or another modern wrapper for dynamic JavaScript pages, and suggests WeasyPrint or Prince for controlled reports. Qt WebEngine, which is Chromium-based, represents a more current browser-engine architecture. These choices are not interchangeable in every workflow; validate pagination, fonts, assets, and operational requirements before migrating.

Common troubleshooting cases
The PDF is made, but columns or alignment are wrong
Check whether the layout depends on flexbox or Grid, then test a table-, float-, or block-based fallback. Confirm the production binary and Qt build; a successful conversion does not report every ignored CSS declaration.
It looks right locally but not on the server
Compare the actual wkhtmltopdf executable, patched-Qt status, installed fonts, and local or remote asset access. Reproduce the production conditions with the same small test set before changing CSS to compensate for a different environment.
Dynamic content is missing
Determine whether the page requires modern JavaScript or waits for data to load. The available options include --run-script and --window-status, but they cannot supply APIs absent from the old runtime. For dynamic pages, follow the project’s recommendation to use Puppeteer or another modern wrapper.

Page breaks split content unexpectedly
Test the print-oriented page-break rules against both short and long representative documents. Long tables and content near page boundaries deserve explicit inspection because basic support for page-break styling does not guarantee complex pagination behavior.
A visual effect vanishes without an error
Assume an unsupported or partially supported declaration may have been silently ignored. Reduce the effect to a minimal test case, add a basic fallback, and check output from the target binary. This is especially important for gradients, transforms, pseudo-elements, newer selectors, and SVG styling.
